Critical Care Medicine APP - Rapid Response Team

Our MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is a 600‑bed facility where Critical Care APPs work autonomously, but collaboratively with intensive care physicians and a multidisciplinary team to provide emergent and urgent care to patients in critical conditions, including leading Rapid Response and Code Blue teams. The APP will actively participate in daily rounds and will develop and implement a plan of care that is consistent with evidence‑based medical standards and quality initiatives. The critical care APP will also lead the Code Team, participate in Rapid Response, and will be called upon to perform critical care consultation for unstable patients who may require ICU upgrade on various units throughout the hospital.
Essential Job Duties
Providing emergent and urgent care to patients in critical condition.
Performing histories and physical examinations of patients.
Establishing appropriate medical diagnoses based on patient history, chart review, physical exam, lab testing, and radiographic imaging.
Recommending, initiating, and managing appropriate therapeutic interventions for various pathologies, including respiratory failure, heart failure, shock, and acid‑base disturbances.
Presenting patients on daily rounds with the ICU attending and multidisciplinary team.
Collaborating with all involved care teams, including other consultants.
Performing bedside procedures, including insertion of central venous access, arterial lines, non‑tunneled dialysis, and arterial catheters, as well as chest tubes and thoracentesis.
Communicating between healthcare professionals to promote safe patient transition between shifts, services, and/or levels of care.
Educating and supervising new graduate APPs and students where appropriate.
Schedule Full time (130 shifts/year) with 12‑hour rotating shifts. Day and night coverage, weekends, and rotating holidays required.
Requirements
Graduation from an accredited physician assistant or acute care nurse practitioner program.
Certification as NCCPA (physician assistant) or AGACNP (nurse practitioner).
BLS and ACLS certifications.
One year of critical care experience or in‑patient hospital medicine preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience in advanced procedures.
