Position Overview Assistant Director of Public Works – reports to the Director. Eligible for intermittent remote work while residing in the Sacramento region and reporting to a city worksite with little notice.

Responsibilities

Oversee department‑wide budget preparation and management; supervise the Supervising Financial Analyst and Administrative Officer.

Develop and implement strategies to improve organizational performance and coordinate complex, high‑priority projects spanning divisions.

Act as a key liaison with senior staff across regional boards and partner agencies; advance citywide policies, programs, and process improvements.

Ensure high‑level customer service to internal and external stakeholders, maintaining responsiveness and professionalism.

Monitor execution of city operations; review legislation and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and codes.

Provide strategic planning oversight; advise on policies, resources, and program reports.

Represent city interests in regional forums and collaborative efforts.

Provide leadership and oversight to the department’s strategic planning efforts and serve on planning/design teams.

Ideal Candidate Statement

Strong background in Public Works, municipal budgeting, financing, capital project funding, transportation funding, and grants.

Experience providing strategic oversight of department‑wide budget and funding matters, including internal city funds, fees, and enterprise funds.

Ability to collaborate with the Director of Public Works to resolve complex issues, direct major initiatives, and foster cross‑division collaboration.

Demonstrated commitment to customer service and ability to build trust and positive relationships with staff, community members, elected officials, and partner agencies.

Strong strategic, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to represent City interests in regional forums.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability

Federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to departmental operations.

Technology application to efficient city operations; budgeting, preparation, and administration.

Strategic organizational planning; public speaking and meeting facilitation; leadership and mediation.

Analyze facts, exercise sound judgment, communicate effectively, and integrate diverse stakeholder interests.

Experience and Education

Seven years of progressively responsible professional administrative and analytical experience in municipal government, including five years of project management and supervision.

A bachelor’s degree in public or business administration, political science, economics, urban or regional planning, engineering, or a related field (master’s preferred).

Additional qualifying experience may substitute for required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Proof of education (transcripts, degrees, etc.) required at the time of appointment.
