Salary Range: $115,000 - 120,000 DOE

The Controller, with oversight from the Chief Strategy & Financial Officer (CSFO), manages the accounting processes and issuance of financial statements for United Way of Greater Houston. Leads all day-to-day finance operations and have functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration. Ensures that United Way has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct successful audits. Partners with CSFO to provide management and the Board of Trustees relevant financial data necessary for budgetary and financial decisions. Ensures accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles. Works closely with program leaders and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures, but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages activities in the accounting team while coordinating with the campaign processing departments, ensuring that accounting principles are followed, and internal control procedures complied with in keeping the UWGH's financial records; maintains familiarity with the daily activities of both accounting and campaign processing functions. Directs and coordinates work supporting all internal and external audits. Grant monitoring reviews, and external filing, as needed for the financial, compliance, governmental, and benefit plan audits. Reviews and prepares audit schedules as needed. Drafts audited financial statements and footnotes. Drafts and timely files IRS Form 990, benefit plan compliance filings (401K tests), and DOL Form 5500. Provides ongoing training and development, hiring, retention and performance management of the Accounting Department staff. Utilizes resources to fulfill the objectives and responsibilities of the departments in an effective and efficient manner consistent within operating budgets and plans. Fosters an environment that promotes the professional growth of staff and emphasizes UWGH's Core Values. Prepares and reviews the monthly financial reporting package, assisting VPs and Department Leaders in implementing cost controls and reducing expenditures. Coordinates with the Human Resources/Payroll department to ensure the timely preparation and filing of the quarterly and annual payroll tax filings (and coordinates with program leaders to ensure timely preparation and submission of reporting requirements specified by contracts and agreements (e.g. grants and charitable foundations). Identifies and makes recommendations to the CSFO on resolving key general ledger and accounting presentation issues.
