Position Summary
Our Engineers are a vital part of our organization, and we take pride in hiring the best in the industry. We are looking for an Electrical Engineer on the Deriva Energy Team to perform and troubleshoot complex problems and develop advances solutions within power systems. This role may require supervisory functions including assisting team members, collaboration with other departments, suppliers and manufacturers.
The Electrical Engineer will also work closely with our Operations Staff and/or external customers primarily in support of operations, project activity and creation of design standards for future renewable energy plants. Projects include substations and collector systems for both wind, solar and energy storage projects.
This is a full‑time, permanent position. The physical location will be in Charlotte, NC.
Deriva Energy will offer relocation assistance if you are selected for the role and do not live within a reasonable commute of the work location.
Responsibilities
This position will require travel to various sites throughout the continental U.S.
Ability to travel for short term assignments as required and must to be able to respond and/or provide support to emergency events after hours including but not limited to: reviewing fault logs from SEL and GE multilin relays
Use technical information, such as design information, operating experience, and fundamental engineering principles, to resolve equipment performance problems and technical issues and to provide input to operational decisions relating to turbines, inverters and battery storage
Provide technical assistance to operation teams for protection and controls over the DESS fleet
Ensure assets meet/remain in NERC and ISO compliance
Analyze fault and test data to diagnose/troubleshoot any failures/malfunctions, to direct repairs, to determine performance characteristics of systems, or to evaluate effects of system modifications
Help identify with other units of Deriva, methods to increase plant efficiency/reliability and recommend and implement capital improvement projects to help increase project effectiveness, proficiency, and safety
Analyze and resolve well‑defined problems in area of expertise.
Contribute to team decision‑making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities
Familiar with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.
Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well‑defined problems and analysis of moderate scope and complexity
Conduct engineering and related studies; projects and assignments are clearly defined with focus on development but must be able to complete routine engineering projects with minimal oversight
Ability to design, operate and maintain systems with minimum impact on existing systems
Possess and apply the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures
Demonstrates proficiency in technical competencies and has ability to interpret technical information and instructions
Develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities
Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills
Maintain accurate records and files
Basic Qualifications Engineer II
B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
In addition to required education, (2) years or more of relevant work experience
Engineer III
B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
In addition to required education, (4) years or more of relevant work experience
Desired Qualifications
Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
Experience in engineering contract management and maintaining accurate records and files
Experience in high voltage and sub‑station maintenance
Experience in wind farm or solar farm electrical collection systems, grid connections, inverters, and wind turbines
Experience in supervising engineering resources and contractors
Experience or proven understanding of transformers, HV & LV cables and Inverter Based Resources, protective relaying (SEL relays & GE "L" series relays preferred)
Knowledge of power engineering concepts and theories
Demonstrated ability to set priorities, make informative and persuasive presentations, negotiate, control stressful situations, provide instructions and training, and direct others
Demonstrated ability to read, comprehend, retain, and follow oral and written instructions, exercise good judgment, and communicate effectively
Demonstrated ability to collect and organize data, study and apply policies/procedures, evaluate graphic and/or numerical information, effectively organize and monitor technical work activities including ability to read and comprehend drawings, graphs and maps
Knowledgeable in communications Protocols ( Modbus, Serial & DNP )
Configuration & Mapping experience in SEL Relays, Meters & Reclosers (SEL 451, 751, SEL 651R, SEL 753)
Has an understanding of SEL Control Element Settings Ranges and Accuracies
Able to analyze the polled voltage & frequency values using protocol analyzer
Demonstrated ability to analyze problems and prepare accurate reports including ability to calculate and count, analyze, define/interpret, investigate, fill in forms, create, make decisions, inspect, test devices and indicators, correctly copy details and numerical information in written material
Proficient in working with office computer applications such as Microsoft Office Products and other software tools
Strives to continually improve job‑related, technical, professional knowledge, skills and performance
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities with site personnel
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Successful passing of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
Working Conditions
Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Deriva Energy facility
Must be able to climb a wind turbine (up to 300ft) and meet weight requirement
Must be able and willing to travel to various locations to support area manager's various sites on a frequent basis
Must be able to respond to O&M Support outside normal working hours (on‑call rotation)
Travel up to 25%
Valid driver's license
Must be able to lift up to and carry up to 25lbs
The hiring manager may elect to fill this position at the higher‑level dependent upon skills and experience
