Electrical Design Engineer
Job Description This position involves leading and designing electrical power distribution and signal networks for Gas Turbine projects. The focus is on low‑voltage systems (600 V and below) including the implementation of MCCs, LV Transformers, DC systems, and batteries.
Responsibilities
Develop single‑line diagrams, panelboard schedules, electrical loads lists, motors lists, wiring diagrams, control schematics, cable schedules, and terminations schedules.
Create power system plans, lighting plans, electrical room layouts, elevation drawings, and conduit/cable tray arrangements, including hazardous area classifications.
Perform calculations and sizing of equipment such as breakers, overload devices, relays, cables/conduits/equipment spacing, and illumination levels. Maintain BOMs and manage other design duties.
Develop and review electrical, control, and instrumentation wiring diagrams and cable lists using SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL) or SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI).
Prepare purchase specifications for electrical equipment and select vendors for constructing electrical packages.
Generate electrical drawing packages documenting logic, point‑to‑point wiring, and system interactions.
Interpret and design according to code requirements from relevant authorities, and investigate and understand applicable electrical codes (e.g., NEC/NFPA 70, CEC, IEC, ISA, AGA).
Meet with vendors regularly to ensure all technical and schedule requirements are met.
Interpret and integrate design requirements from the parent company.
Respond to technical inquiries from customers, vendors, and field personnel.
Utilize SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL), SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), and SmartPlant 3D (S3D) for designing electrical power and control systems.
Possess current knowledge of electrical and instrumentation design for industrial facilities.
Preferred experience with generators (150 MVA ratings and above) for Gas or Steam Turbines is a plus.
Comply with all safety policies and practices, reporting unsafe activities.
Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
Contribute to building a positive team spirit and communicate effectively with all levels of employees.
Handle various assignments, including rework, in a timely manner to meet schedule deadlines.
Ensure quality by following standard work/process instructions and identifying potential risks to product quality.
Develop schedules, coordinate, and manage design projects with minimal supervision.
Simplify product designs for improved manufacturability and reduce costs without compromising quality and function.
Assist Sales and Marketing and Development Engineering with projects to enhance existing and develop new product lines.
Meet schedule requirements for project engineering deliverables.
Provide technical support during manufacturing and commissioning of equipment.
Lead junior engineers and interns, supporting their development.
Travel up to 10%.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
Minimum three years of technical experience in industrial facility power distribution design (up to 600 VAC and 220 VDC).
Familiarity with electrical codes, industry standards, and best practices, including strong familiarity with National Electric Code (NFPA 70).
Experience with SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL), SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), and SmartPlant 3D (S3D).
Knowledge of NEMA, IEC, IEEE, ISA, ANSI, NFPA 70E, UL, CSA, TUV, ISA, AGA, and other codes and standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with SmartPlant Electrical, SmartPlant Instrumentation, SmartSketch, and SmartPlant 3D is a plus.
Experience with AutoCAD and lighting calculation software (e.g., DIALux, Visual) is a plus.
Familiarity with Gas/Steam Turbines is advantageous.
Inclination toward computer programming languages is encouraged.
Work Environment This role is based in the office in Lake Mary, FL, with a hybrid schedule allowing for three days in the office and two days remote work.
Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Lake Mary, FL.
Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is US $31.25 – $48.00 per hour.
