This position provides an opportunity to backfill a
Civil Engineering Technician I/II
role within the
Transportation Operations
group for a
limited term , during the incumbent’s temporary assignment to the
ERP team
(Estimated at 18 Months).
Employees in limited term positions receive benefits equivalent to permanent full-time employees. Therefore, they will be eligible to earn

Please Note: This recruitment is a department promotional opportunity and is only open to current employees of the Public Works department who have permanent status with the County of San Luis Obispo.
This position serves as a public-facing role within the County’s Transportation Division, responding to roadway-related requests and complaints from residents and partner agencies. The incumbent manages a database of active public requests & complaints in SAP, conducts field investigations, collects data, and applies applicable standards and policies to assess roadway conditions. Responsibilities include preparing schematic signing and striping plans, routing and coordinating work orders, and collaborating with road crews for installation. The position also supports other transportation staff, signal maintenance staff, and other County departments on projects and programs that enhance roadway safety and operations.
The ideal candidate is a motivated, detail-oriented professional with strong communication skills and a commitment to public service. They have a basic understanding of transportation standards and regulations, including the County Public Improvement Standards, California MUTCD, and Caltrans Standard Plans & Specification, as well as familiarity with County purchasing procedures and accounting structure. The candidate possesses basic drafting skills, exposure to CAD software, and proficiency in SAP for managing notifications. They are a collaborative problem-solver who takes pride in supporting safe and efficient roadway operations.
Education and Experience A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:
Civil Engineering Technician I:
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate.
AND:
Either A: Two years as Civil Engineering Technician Aide or an equivalent class; Or B: Three years of non-professional civil engineering surveying or construction inspection experience.
Civil Engineering Technician II:
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate. Two years as a Civil Engineering Technician I or an equivalent class.
Licenses and Certificates A valid driver license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
