Role Overview The Senior Tax Accountant plays a key role in supporting the organization’s tax compliance and reporting functions. This position is responsible for preparing and reviewing federal and state tax returns and supporting workpapers for partnerships, S corporations, and trusts, while also assisting with individual and exempt organization filings as needed.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university.

Master’s degree in accounting or related field.

Certified Public Accounting license (“CPA”) preferred.

Minimum of 2 - 3 years related experience in tax accounting, preferably with a background in public accounting.

Experience preparing returns for partnerships, S corporations, and trusts. Exposure to individuals and exempt organizations a plus.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of tax compliance and completion of all commonly required entity, fiduciary, and personal tax filings.

Proficiency with GoSystems tax preparation software.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications.

Ability to demonstrate high accountability in a hybrid work environment, including effective communication with team members.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with employees, executives, and third-party providers with poise and diplomacy.

Capability to take ownership and responsibility of work product, both independently and as part of a team.

Attention to detail and the ability to produce high‑quality work within designated deadlines.

Adherence to high personal and professional ethical standards.

Ability to maintain confidential and/or proprietary information.

Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with preparing federal and state tax returns, which involves gathering the necessary tax information, analyzing the financials and documents for any essential tax entries, preparing tax workpapers and tax schedules, and entering the information into the tax software.

Prepare federal and state income tax estimates, extensions, and various state filings.

Review tax workpapers and returns of team members and external providers as needed.

Ensure tax workpapers are updated for consistency and tax law changes throughout all entities to provide efficiencies and streamline data entry.

Take initiative to improve processes and workflow.

Assist in monitoring a due date list for all tax filings and various other deadlines.

Work with accounting on making any necessary adjustments to an entity's books.

Communicate and collaborate with accounting firms involved with MI’s tax compliance.

Assist with IRS and state agency inquiries and tax notices.

Research various tax issues and planning opportunities as they arise.

Perform duties that may be assigned from time to time as directed.
