General Expectations: This position is fully in-person during the event. Scheduling will be based on event and departmental needs and coordinated with the Theater Ops Team. Occasional in-person meetings prior to the event may be required. Any external commitments that could impact shift availability should be communicated to your supervisor as early as possible.

Compensation: $22/hr

Benefits: This is a part-time position during Outfest’s reconstruction phase. As such, no traditional benefits (such as health insurance or paid time off) are currently offered.

This position is non-exempt and all authorized hours worked will be paid in accordance with applicable wage and hour laws.

Roles and Responsibilities Position Summary: The Theater Assistant supports daily theater operations to ensure a seamless, organized, and welcoming event experience for all attendees. Working closely with the Theater Operations Manager and Box Office team, this role manages screening schedules, audience flow, crowd control, and volunteer coordination at assigned venues. This position requires strong customer service skills, professionalism under pressure, and the ability to make quick decisions that support both guest needs and operational priorities.

The role is part-time and in-person, with shifts scheduled based on theater coverage needs during the festival. Additional in-person training or pre-festival work may be required.

Ensure theaters open and close on time and screenings start promptly.

Admit audiences efficiently and maintain professional audience flow.

Coordinate standby ticket processes with the Box Office team.

Provide responsive and respectful support for patron/guest concerns.

Maintain clear communication with Production and Security regarding theater-related issues or incidents.

Ensure the theater and surrounding areas remain clean, organized, and ready for guests.

Stay informed of all changes to film screenings or venue timelines and relay updates to volunteer staff.

Manage ballot distribution and collection for eligible screenings; ensure timely submission of completed ballots.

Oversee ticket/pass scanning and entry verification at your assigned venue.

Manage queue lines and crowds to ensure efficiency, safety, and accessibility.

Liaise with multiple departments (Programming, Box Office, Production, Volunteer Coordination) to support overall festival operations.

Qualifications

Previous experience working at a film festival, live event, or high-volume public venue required.

Strong communication and customer service skills; ability to remain calm under pressure.

Experience supervising or coordinating volunteers preferred.

Organized, proactive, and able to follow tasks through to completion.

Professional demeanor and ability to collaborate with diverse teams.

Flexibility to work evenings and weekends during the event.

Commitment to accessibility, inclusivity, and delivering exceptional guest experiences.
