Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer (CAO) Position: Vice President for Academic Affairs and CAO Term: 12 months Agency: Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Location: Fairfax County, VA 059 Compensation: Commensurate with education and experience

Job Overview As the principal academic leader, you will provide visionary, strategic, and operational leadership across NOVA’s six campuses, NOVA Online, dual‑enrollment high schools, and other instructional sites. You will ensure quality, consistency, and integrity of all academic programs, develop and evaluate curricula, and design a responsive, unified academic schedule aligned with the College’s enrollment goals.

Key Responsibilities

Provide strategic and operational leadership for NOVA’s instructional programs, ensuring quality and alignment with the College’s mission.

Advise the President on all aspects of academic programs and college‑wide planning.

Collaborate with Provosts, Vice Presidents, Senate, and academic departments on periodic program reviews, curriculum development, and accreditation activities.

Lead faculty development initiatives through the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence.

Oversee student success initiatives, including high‑school dual enrollment, articulation agreements, and alignment with enrollment management.

Supervise the development and publication of the College catalog and academic schedule.

Represent Academic Affairs on boards, advisory committees, and VCCS committees.

Provide leadership and oversight for NOVA Online and high‑school dual enrollment.

Develop and manage partnerships with local school districts, community institutions, and other higher‑education partners.

Manage and evaluate assigned staff, including performance management and professional development.

Assume additional duties as assigned, including emergency response support when requested by the Governor.

Qualifications

Earned Doctorate from an accredited institution.

Significant progressive, senior academic administrative experience in a community college or university setting.

Demonstrated proficiency in using data, evidence, and analysis for decision‑making.

Several years of full‑time teaching experience in a postsecondary institution.

Strong understanding of and commitment to the community college mission.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of institutional, state, federal, and accreditation policies for postsecondary programs.

Understanding of the impact of technology on contemporary learning environments.

Skill in building and sustaining partnerships across diverse stakeholders.

Excellent interpersonal communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.

Analytical thinking with ability to synthesize data and present findings to varied audiences.

Strong organizational and time‑management skills, with ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the academic community.

Additional Considerations

Tenure or equivalent multi‑year contract within an academic discipline.

Experience with strategic planning, academic program review, and institutional effectiveness.

Experience building collaborations between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, and with external industry partners.

Familiarity with large, complex, multi‑campus community college systems.

Employment Details Full‑time, base salary commensurate with experience. Some travel required.
