Kenaitze Indian Tribe – Dena’ina Wellness Center (DWC) – Position in Alaska
Job Summary The Medical Director directs daily administrative issues and coordinates clinical care in collaboration with the Primary Care Health Systems Administrator. The role allocates a 60:40 ratio of administrative to direct patient care, overseeing up to 480 patients, leading policy development, quality improvement, and community health initiatives.
Essential Functions
Assume an administrative and clinical leadership role for the primary care team on a 60:40 ratio.
Support and promote the Dene' Model of Care, patient‑centered integrated care.
Provide clinical oversight of Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and RN Supervisor.
Participate in administrative decision‑making, approving policies to support quality care and accreditation.
Partner with the Health Services Administration to optimize flow, productivity, and patient access.
Oversee peer‑review activities mandated by regulatory agencies and funders.
Assist in creating medical protocol standardization and ensure adherence to accepted care standards.
Collaborate with Dental, Behavioral Health, Wellness, and Social Service staff to integrate programs and improve population health outcomes.
Recommend innovative modalities for treatment in collaboration with health leadership staff.
Aide in credentialing and privileging new providers to the Dena'ina Wellness Center.
Serve as the overseeing physician for the Center's vaccine program.
Analyze epidemiology data to assess health trends and identify improvement opportunities.
Provide medical consultations with other providers.
Utilize electronic health record (EHR) to document clinical activity and manage population health.
Lead medical education and training development and conduct.
Serve in a leadership, advocacy, and mentorship role for the medical staff.
Ensure compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws, Tribal policies, and TERO ordinance.
Working Conditions
Medium work:
Exert up to 50 lbs occasionally, up to 20 lbs frequently, or up to 10 lbs constantly.
Physical Requirements:
Stand, sit, walk, use hands/fingers, stoop, kneel, crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, push/pull, repetitive motion.
OSHA Category I – exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue.
Equipment: copier, fax, scanner, other office equipment.
Tools: standard medical office equipment.
Travel: local, in‑state and out‑of‑state as required.
Qualifications Education
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
Experience
7–10 years in family practice, emphasis on cross‑cultural primary care.
Experience in a multi‑provider setting.
Medical management experience.
Preferred: experience working with Alaska Native/American Indian populations.
Preferred
Knowledge of and experience with cultural diversity.
License / Certification
Current Alaska medical licensure (MD or DO).
Current DEA certificate; BLS certification required.
Valid Alaska State driver’s license, or placement of a memorandum of understanding within 90 days of hire, with approval of the hiring manager.
Special Skills
Understanding of quality improvement methods (e.g., PDSA cycles).
Detail‑oriented, interpersonal, problem‑solving, and technical skills.
Dynamic leadership and team‑building approach.
Public health training and/or experience.
Effective communication with health professionals.
Knowledge of healthcare accreditation standards.
