FY26: Paraeducator Level II, Special Education Itinerant, Laytonsville ES, 6 hrs 10 mos. At the direction of the principal, this paraeducator performs a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well‑being to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP). The paraeducator may participate with students in learning activities off school grounds and assist with academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical support. The work focuses on facilitating mastery of grade‑level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards and managing behaviors that impact students’ ability to access the curriculum. Students supported at this level may participate in general education or specialized instructional settings and may be pulled out for individualized or small group instruction. The position also includes instructional and classroom management supports, and related clerical tasks for teachers and staff in all classrooms.

All new paraeducators are hired at grade 15 and have the opportunity to promote to grade 16 after successfully completing the 6‑month probationary period and required training hours.

Physical Demands Frequent bending, walking, and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds may be required.

Special Requirements Outside duty may be required. Must accommodate flexible scheduling, change of location/program, and plan activities during teacher absence. Specific training may be required.

Job Specific Information Paraeducator Level II, Special Education Itinerant, Laytonsville ES, 6hrs. Wage range: $25.40–$38.15 per hour based on years of service.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and SCPS policies.

Ability to assist with instructional program implementation and student behavior monitoring.

Ability to work effectively with children, young adults, and staff.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, perform required tasks.

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Read/write/speak English.

Interact with and support students with special needs.

Knowledge of standard computer hardware and software (Google Workspace, MS Office, web‑based tools).

Knowledge or ability to quickly learn the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Education, Training, and Experience

Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s preferred. Minimum of nine credit‑hours related to education field such as behavior management, instructional strategies.

One year of experience working with students in structured educational situations preferred.

If no relevant coursework, two to four years of experience working with children and adolescents in a structured setting (daycare, pre‑school, etc.) required.

At least 48 college credits and two years of experience in a structured setting.

Two years of experience in a structured setting (daycare, pre‑school, adult day program, after‑school program, etc.).

Successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment with a score of 455 or higher required.

Any combination of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.
