The
Controller
provides strategic and operational leadership for the finance and accounting functions, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency across all entities. This role reports directly to the CFO and manages a team of accounting professionals to support the organization's mission and financial sustainability.
Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Management
Lead and mentor the accounting and finance teams, overseeing performance, professional development, and goal setting.
Define clear roles, responsibilities, and growth opportunities for team members.
Ensure consistent implementation of accounting policies and internal controls across all entities.
Oversee annual independent audits, targeting unmodified opinions and no findings. Accounting Operations
Direct daily accounting functions, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and debt management.
Oversee the monthly and annual close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Maintain the chart of accounts, general ledger integrity, and documentation standards.
Ensure GAAP compliance and adherence to nonprofit, government, and grant requirements.
Supervise grants and program accounting to ensure spending aligns with budgets and funding restrictions. Financial Reporting & Analysis
Prepare and deliver timely financial statements, reports, and dashboards for leadership and the Board.
Support the CFO in forecasting, budgeting, and financial strategy.
Monitor cash flow and liquidity; develop forecasting and cash management tools.
Provide variance analysis and actionable insights to inform decision-making. Audit, Tax, & Compliance
Manage annual financial audits, agreed-upon procedures (AUPs), and regulatory reviews.
Oversee tax filings, including IRS Form 990 and all required state and local reports.
Stay current on evolving accounting standards, nonprofit regulations, and compliance risks. Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
CPA required.
Significant experience in public accounting; prior Controller or equivalent leadership experience preferred.
Deep technical expertise in GAAP, audits, and compliance.
Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
Experience with grants management, nonprofit, or education sector finance preferred.
Compensation:
$165,000 Salary is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications.
