Structural Welder
Location: Vidor, TX
Company: Optimized Process Designs, LLC (OPD) , part of the larger Koch Engineered Solutions (KES) organization. OPD is an engineering and construction company headquartered in Katy, TX that specializes in natural gas, natural gas liquids, and petrochemical projects.
Core Responsibilities
Own and maintain a portable welding rig including PPE and jack stands.
Weld skids, structural steel, and related equipment according to specifications.
Read drawings and recognize basic symbols for job application.
Operate tools and equipment such as angle grinders, beveling machines, cut‑off grinders, hammers, tape measure, levels, and torches (oxygen/acetylene & plasma).
Demonstrate skilled knowledge of welding processes required (GMAW and/or SMAW).
Apply material identification, equipment utilization, welder equipment set‑up and maintenance.
Work independently with minimal supervision.
Maintain safety and accuracy in all welds.
Field Safety Expectations
Participate in a strong safety culture.
Recognize safety hazards and risks.
Attend onsite safety meetings.
Follow OPD and client safety policies and procedures.
Stay aware of changing conditions on an active jobsite.
Arrive on time and ready for work.
Maintain a positive attitude and work well in a team.
Physical Demands
Work in outdoor weather and environmental conditions including extreme heat and humidity, extreme cold, and high elevations.
Lifting and carrying awkward objects up to 60 lbs.
Standing for extended periods up to 11 hours per day.
Using arms, legs, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, crawling, twisting, reaching, and bending routinely.
Work on elevated platforms and maintain balance on narrow platforms such as beams and pipes while wearing a full‑body harness and lanyard.
Use hands to handle, control, and feel objects and/or tools.
Basic Qualifications
At least 2 years of structural welding experience.
Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
Ownership of necessary tools for welding and fabrication of structural steel.
Pass code welding tests: ASME Section IX 6G pipe test (SMAW and GTAW) and AWS D1.1 plate test for structural welds (SMAW and/or GMAW).
Produce welds visually acceptable per construction code ASME B 31.3.
Maintain equipment in a safe condition.
Work shifts up to 12 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Meet all physical demands of the job.
Attend mandatory safety meetings.
Serve as a safety role model.
Preferred Qualifications
5 or more years of experience as a structural welder and fabricator.
Previous experience in a gas plant construction environment.
Strong interpersonal skills.
