BUS MONITOR (MULTIPLE POSITIONS)
Join the South Kitsap School District as a Bus Monitor. This role involves supervising students on school buses, ensuring safe travel, and providing assistance—especially to students with severe physical or mental disabilities.
Purpose Statement The primary purpose of the Bus Monitor is to enable all students—including those with disabilities—to ride the bus safely by supervising, assisting with seating, and enforcing bus rules.
Essential Functions
Assist with the safe transportation of students, ensuring correct seat placement and adherence to bus rules.
Participate in training for special procedures (e.g., suctioning, tracheotomy cleaning) as required for caring for critical‑care students.
Communicate with administrators, teachers, and parents regarding student behavior and safety.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with district policies, federal and state regulations, and privacy laws.
Manage student behavior and report disciplinary concerns to appropriate administrators.
Monitor students, equipment, and materials for safety.
Participate in mandatory emergency evacuation drills and respond to emergencies.
Serve as a role model to students, demonstrating a positive attitude and professional work ethic.
Supervise students while on the bus to ensure safety.
Understand each student’s medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
Enforce bus riding rules, regulations, and district policies.
Other Functions
Perform additional related duties as assigned to support the efficient functioning of the unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills
Effective communication with diverse groups.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Capability to work as part of a team on a school bus in a potentially loud environment.
Knowledge
Basic math, reading, and following written instructions.
Knowledge of child development stages and age‑appropriate communication methods.
Abilities
Physical ability to lift, push, or pull at least 25 pounds.
Ability to exit a rear or side emergency bus door within 25 seconds without assistance.
Experience Desired: Relevant experience with special‑needs students or in a transportation setting.
Education (Minimum) High school diploma or equivalent.
Certificates and Licenses
CPR / First Aid Certificate.
SafetyCare de‑escalation and restraint training.
Clearances
Washington State Patrol Fingerprint.
FBI Fingerprint.
Background clearance.
Other Requirements
Completed online application with supporting documents.
