Comments: When working in environments where de‑escalation, isolation, and restraint training is required, employees will be compensated at a rate of an additional $0.50 per hour (elementary) or $0.75 per hour (secondary).
Office of Public Instruction Requirement: All Paraeducators must provide a copy of their high school diploma and/or transcripts or GED to meet Title 1, Part A federal law requirements. Provide prior to selection.
Purpose Statement
The job of Paraeducator - Academic Adaptive (AA) is to provide support to the instructional program within assigned classroom, specifically assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in general education or self‑contained classrooms; implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior; providing information to appropriate school personnel; and attending IEP meetings.
This job reports to the Building Administrator.
Essential Functions
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support classroom objectives.
- Assists students, teachers, and other certificated personnel to implement instruction and/or IEPs.
- Attends meetings and trainings (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, de‑escalation training) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
- Develops, under supervision, instruction to students in academic, daily living, physical, communication, and/or behavior/social skills for evaluating IEP objectives and ensuring student success.
- Implements behavior plans designed by IEP teams for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to reinforce learning concepts.
- Maintains confidentiality following HIPAA, FERPA, and IEP guidelines.
- Maintains instructional materials and records to ensure availability of items and meet mandated requirements.
- Monitors students in various school environments (playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Observes and collects data via data sheets to support progress of individual goals and objectives.
- Provides clerical and general classroom assistance for staff (e.g., collecting and inputting data, correspondence, copying, filing, preparing and organizing materials).
- Supervises students in school setting to maintain a safe and positive environment.
- Works under direct and indirect supervision using standardized routines.
Other Functions
- Performs other related duties as assigned; may be assigned to a student as a 1:1 paraeducator to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Required skills include safety practices, operation of standard office equipment, and accurate record maintenance. Knowledge of basic math, instructional procedures, age‑appropriate activities, child development stages, and de‑escalation strategies is required. Abilities required include scheduling, data collating, working with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, teamwork, and effective communication.
Responsibilities
Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; lead, guide, and coordinate others; operate within a defined budget; and utilize resources from other work units as required.
Work Environment
Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 30% walking, and 40% standing and is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury or illness.
Experience
Job‑related experience is desired.
Education (Preferred)
Paraeducator Certificate Program.
Education (Minimum)
High school diploma or equivalent with emphasis in completion of an associate’s degree, or 72 quarter or 48 semester credits, or passage of Washington State Para Pro Assessment.
