Job Description The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Subsistence is recruiting a Subsistence Resource Specialist 1 or 2 located in Anchorage. The role is a permanent, seasonal position that supports Southern Region subsistence research projects. The incumbent will assist with the development, planning, implementation, and reporting on the human dimensions of subsistence activities and regulations in southcentral, southwest, and southeast Alaska. Fieldwork in remote communities is required and may include travel in small planes and boats for 1–2 weeks at a time multiple times per year.
Our Organization, Mission, and Culture The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s mission is to manage Alaska’s fish, game, and aquatic plant resources on the sustained yield principle for the benefit of the economy and well‐being of the people of the state. The Division of Subsistence gathers, quantifies, evaluates, and reports information on customary and traditional uses of Alaska’s fish and wildlife resources. The mission is to ensure sustainable subsistence opportunities for area residents by planning and leading data collection in the southcentral, southwest, and southeast regions.

Working Conditions The position is located in the Anchorage ADF&G regional office (333 Raspberry Road). The incumbent will interact with the public in a research capacity, coordinate with rural communities, and conduct fieldwork to collect harvest or traditional knowledge data. Additional fieldwork requires frequent travel to rural Alaska communities for 1–2 weeks at a time, multiple times per year.
Who We Are Looking For
Knowledge of subsistence in Alaska and a working knowledge of Alaska’s diverse communities.
Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines and carry out tasks in a timely fashion.
Experience collecting data using established social science methods, working with databases, preparing data analyses and summaries, writing research proposals, and preparing and presenting oral presentations.
Experience addressing public inquiries on fish and wildlife issues or regulatory requirements using clear oral and written communication skills while working in rural Alaska.
Familiarity with standard office computing equipment and software, including Microsoft Office and Windows.
Minimum Qualifications Subsistence Resource Specialist 1:
A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, sociology, geography, or a closely related field.
Subsistence Resource Specialist 2:
A bachelor’s degree in the same fields plus one year of professional subsistence resource research at the entry level.
