Master Roaster, Global Coffee
Starbucks invites experienced master roasters to join their global coffee team. This role focuses on optimizing roasting systems, ensuring consistent coffee quality, and collaborating across the organization.
Base Pay Range $102,100.00/yr - $153,300.00/yr
Responsibilities
Provide expertise in roast theory and actively apply knowledge to improve processes. Creates network‑wide definitions of roasting standards and specifications.
Exhibit deep understanding of roast models (setup and troubleshooting) and adhere to all quality milestones and procedures.
Leverage experience and process knowledge to teach roaster upset response and protocols. Train plant master roasters how the equipment and PLCs should interact.
Demonstrate strong knowledge of the supervisory settings in manufacturing systems or other restricted control parameters in automatic systems.
Commission roast curves/roast parameters for external manufacturers. Lead roast qualification and annual roast quality audits across global roasting network.
Consult on roasting capability of prospective business partners.
Gather records and reports on operational and quality metrics, through manual or automated systems to reduce misses and NIS coffees.
Lead SSC based experiments for roasting plant projects in collaboration with Global master roasters, engineers and coffee leadership.
Support daily roasting requirements for Pilot Plant. Perform general roaster maintenance and sanitation.
Participate in weekly sensory panels and identify how process deviations impact product profiles.
Support optimization across the network by identifying and acting upon potential roadblocks and process improvements to reduce downtime, scrap, and product not meeting specifications.
Maintain strict confidentiality as it relates to company proprietary information.
Assess training needs of network master roasters and broader roaster team for continuous improvement and provide feedback to leadership.
Develop, coach, and mentor network master roasters to understand current and new technologies and processes.
Support network‑level issue resolution.
Create SOPs and implement change management where necessary.
Facilitate roasting seminars and classes.
Conduct roasting events for company, tours, and media events.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Ability to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross‑functional projects and activities.
Skilled and experienced in ERP Systems, MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot machine failures and make adjustments.
Critical thinking, decision making, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.
Familiarity with BRC or equivalent, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and air quality standards.
Ability to support projects and manage the process independently, including defining, developing, documenting and executing multiple related tasks.
Strong written and verbal skills.
Ability to understand written policies and guidelines, specifications and safety standards.
Operation of manual and automated processing equipment using computer‑based control systems (7 years).
Gathering, recording and reporting on operational and quality metrics, through manual or automated systems (7 years).
Operation of roasting, green coffee delivery and roasted coffee (7 years).
Regulated food manufacturing environment (7 years).
Performing quality tests using analytical tools (5 years).
