We’re hiring a hands‑on

Manager, IT Systems

to own day‑to‑day infrastructure and end‑user technology while managing our MSP, IT budgets, and software licenses/contracts. This is a technical leadership role (no direct reports to start) for someone who can both

do the work

and

run the function —keeping systems secure, stable, and scalable.

This role reports to the CEO or CFO. The Manager, IT Systems role is a Boston‑based onsite position. We offer flexible Fridays that allow you to work from home if needed.

Key Tasks

Endpoint & OS Management

Provision / deprovision laptops and troubleshoot Windows, macOS, and Ubuntu.

Maintain device compliance, hardening, and automation for build images and joins.

Core Microsoft Stack

Administer Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Admin settings as applicable), security & compliance features, and identity integrations.

Windows Server & Directory Services

Own Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and related Windows Server services.

Networking

Operate and maintain our network and wireless access points.

Handle VLANs, routing basics, QoS where applicable, and network monitoring.

Virtualization & Compute

Manage a mixed VMware and Hyper‑V environment: hosts, clusters, templates, snapshots, capacity planning, and patching.

Security Operations & Tooling

Primary admin for core security tool.

Implement and monitor IAM, RBAC, SSO, MFA, least‑privilege, and baseline policies.

Operate and monitor firewalls (rules, NAT, VPNs, basic troubleshooting) and elevate deeper work to partners when needed.

Storage & Backups

Administer NAS (shares, permissions, snapshots) and ensure backup/recovery posture.

Automation & Scripting

Use PowerShell and Bash to automate routine tasks (user lifecycle, reporting, compliance checks).

Leverage AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) to accelerate research, troubleshooting, and script drafting safely and responsibly.

Service Operations & Asset Management

Own the helpdesk queue via Jira Service Management: workflows, SLAs, and knowledge base.

Maintain accurate asset inventory, lifecycle, and secure disposal.

Vendor, MSP, and Budget Management

Act as day‑to‑day owner for the MSP relationship (SLOs, escalation, QA).

Manage licenses and contracts; forecast and track the IT systems budget.

Partner with VARs and software vendors on renewals, true‑ups, and audits.

Compliance & Best Practices

Keep systems patched, monitored, and documented; support audits and risk assessments.

Write and maintain SOPs, runbooks, diagrams, and architecture/asset records.

Desired Skills

5–8+ years in hands‑on IT systems/infrastructure roles with growing ownership; prior experience running small‑company IT strongly preferred.

Strong proficiency with Windows, macOS, and Ubuntu endpoints, Microsoft 365, and Windows Server (AD/DNS/DHCP/GPO).

Working knowledge of Cisco switching and Meraki APs; comfortable owning a simple LAN/WLAN environment.

Practical experience with VMware and Hyper‑V administration.

Security fundamentals: Okta, CrowdStrike, Veeam, Mimecast; Palo Alto firewall fundamentals.

Storage basics with Synology NAS.

Solid PowerShell (req.) and Bash (strongly preferred) scripting for automation.

Comfortable and effective using AI tools to research, draft scripts, and accelerate problem‑solving.

Proven vendor/MSP management, license/contract management, and budget accountability.

Excellent communication, documentation, and customer service mindset.

Nice to have: experience in biotech/Life Sciences, regulated environments, or lightweight compliance work.

Compensation & Benefits

Base Salary: $115,000 – $150,000 annually, commensurate with experience
