Our Client is a growing financial services company headquartered in central Houston that serves the ultra–high-net-worth (UHNW) community. We’re seeking a Vice President, Tax to join the leadership team and oversee the firm’s tax function.
ABOUT THE ROLE The Vice President, Tax will lead the Tax Department and serve as a member of the Executive Team, working closely with the CEO, President, and department heads on growth, profitability, and process improvements. This role oversees Tax Managers, Tax Accountants, and support staff while coordinating across three specialized sub‑departments: investments, family office, and high‑net‑worth tax. The VP will play a critical role in managing compliance, planning, and client‑facing responsibilities, while also providing leadership, training, and oversight across the tax team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced tax professional looking to transition out of public accounting while continuing to expand their technical expertise and leadership impact.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead and oversee the Tax Department, including direct supervision of Tax Managers, Accountants, and support staff.
Coordinate with outside partners and CPA firms to ensure accurate and timely preparation of federal and state partnership returns, extensions, and K‑1 distributions.
Review ownership changes year over year to ensure accurate K‑1 allocations.
Oversee services including payroll, bill pay, QuickBooks accounting, budgeting, and cash flow projections.
Review client‑prepared federal and state tax returns (individual, trust, estate, gift, and private foundation).
Ensure accuracy of CPA‑prepared Trust Accounting Income (TAI) calculations.
Prepare estate and gift tax filings (Forms 706/709) with supporting valuation workpapers.
Coordinate with outside CPA firms on high‑net‑worth client tax returns, ensuring accuracy and planning opportunities.
Review CPA‑prepared returns for consistency, accuracy, and compliance.
Ensure timely filing of all federal/state tax returns and estimated payments.
Represent clients in IRS and state audits, correspondence, and resolution of tax matters.
Partner with the Executive Team on budgeting, cash flow, and strategic tax planning initiatives.
Oversee client invoicing for tax‑related services, ensuring accurate time tracking and billing.
Stay current on tax law changes to ensure compliance across all filings and documents.
QUALIFICATIONS
CPA license (required).
Minimum of 6 years of public accounting experience (more desirable).
Proficiency in QuickBooks, Excel, and Word.
Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to multitask and manage special projects effectively.
