Head of Manufacturing Strategy and Operations Head of Manufacturing Strategy and Operations, Foster City, CA. Gilead Sciences is currently seeking a Head of Manufacturing Strategy and Operations who will design and develop an organization to centralize activities to support a complex network of roughly 1,400 employees across multiple locations, delivering medicines for Gilead’s clinical and commercial portfolio. This role may manage a team of 10–20 employees with 4–5 direct reports and will provide oversight and direction for the following areas:

Hiring, mentoring, and developing team members; setting performance goals and leading performance and talent management processes consistent with Gilead policies and practices.

Building and maintaining an organizational culture aligned with Gilead values and leadership commitments, with emphasis on quality and safety.

Developing a digital strategy for the Manufacturing organization in collaboration with the PDM and corporate teams responsible for digital, IT, OT, and data analytics.

Identifying and defining the implementation of a modern manufacturing management system for Gilead (e.g., Lean Manufacturing) and coordinating with similar efforts across PDM.

Defining the organizational and operational strategy for Manufacturing, including processes for periodic review and leading the Manufacturing Leadership Team through that process; defining and delivering projects identified in the Manufacturing strategy; leading collaboration with PDM Network Strategy and Project Management teams.

Defining and implementing metrics to drive visibility into operational performance, defining and maintaining resource models to support sites, functions, and PDM portfolio management; leading the Operational and Capital budgeting process (including a multi-year view); providing centralized resource management for Manufacturing resources defined in G.Plan (Planisware).

Designing, building, and leading a high-performing organization to drive strategic initiatives and centralize activities in support of Manufacturing’s global product, pipeline, and people goals.

Delivering strategic innovation for global Manufacturing by creating a cross-functional ecosystem that supports agile empowered teams; scanning the external environment to develop a roadmap for investment.

Managing purchase orders, invoice reconciliation, procurement and planning processes, and other logistics and business processes needed to support interactions with contract manufacturing organizations.

Additionally, the leader will serve as a strategic thought partner to the Manufacturing Leadership Team to help design and implement a Manufacturing innovation roadmap, including digital transformation and collaboration with PDM initiatives to enable Gilead’s 2030 ambitions. The role reports to the SVP of Manufacturing and is a member of the Manufacturing Leadership Team. The ideal candidate will have broad experience in management within a GMP manufacturing environment, a proven track record of working in a matrixed organization, and collaboration with cross-functional teams such as PDM and other Gilead functions. Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with internal and external teams at all levels, including Senior Management, are required. The position requires the ability to design and optimize organizations and translate business and strategic context into action.

Knowledge, Experience, And Skills

Requires a Master’s degree or Ph.D. with 16+ years of relevant professional experience, or a BS with 16+ years of relevant professional experience; a degree in a relevant scientific or business discipline is strongly preferred.

Strong business acumen.

Excellent organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills.

The Ideal Candidate Would Also Have

Experience with CMC requirements for drug development and manufacturing of a range of product modalities.

Comprehensive understanding of the biopharmaceutical industry, R&D, and product commercialization, including regulatory framework and global manufacturing trends.

Familiarity with FDA and ICH guidelines related to registration, quality, and compliance for drug substances, drug products, and devices.

Experience managing organizational cross-functional initiatives and/or business operations programs.

Strategic thinking with ability to influence and challenge the status quo.

Ability to manage multiple priorities, draw out diverse views, and exercise tact and discretion in challenging situations.

Proven ability to manage complex and ambiguous projects, influence stakeholders without authority, network across the organization, and communicate with senior leaders in a fast-paced environment.

Experience defining or implementing a manufacturing management system.

The salary range for this position is $281,010.00 – $363,660.00. Actual compensation will vary based on experience, qualifications, and location. This role may be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives, paid time off, and a benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.
