NC13 Description Of Work

The North Carolina Department of Revenue is looking for a Tax Auditor in the Motor Fuels Section of the Examination Division. This is a full-time, permanent position with a hybrid remote work schedule and state benefits, including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, and retirement. This position will work out of the Raleigh Service Center. The minimum starting salary is $54,137. The Motor Fuels Section administers and enforces motor fuels tax laws, motor carrier laws, and some motor vehicle laws. The Tax Auditor examines motor fuels tax returns and records to ensure taxpayer compliance with the Revenue laws of North Carolina, and conducts audits for International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) purposes. It is the responsibility of this position to perform accurate and complete audits of financial books and records of motor fuel suppliers, distributors, and service stations registered with the Excise Tax Division to determine tax compliance with multiple tax schedules. Audits may be conducted at the taxpayer’s place of business, so some overnight and out-of-state travel may be required. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Management Preferences

A vehicle and a valid driver’s license are required due to travel requirements. Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices Basic proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax Minimum Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least twelve semester hours of accounting from an accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Related fields include Accounting, Administrative Science, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Public Administration, Tax, and related areas. A transcript must accompany the application to verify accounting hours. Eligibility and Background

This position is subject to federal and state criminal background checks that may include fingerprinting and verification of tax compliance. Tax compliance is defined as having filed and paid all North Carolina state taxes owed or being in a non-delinquent status for taxes currently owed. Recruitment Range
