Duties and Responsibilities

Serve customers by assisting with vehicle registration, titling, and licensing services at the service window.

Provide clear and accurate information to customers about vehicle registration requirements.

Money Handling and Cash Reconciliation

Accurately count money, process transactions, and issue receipts for vehicle registration and titling.

Ensure the cash drawer is balanced at the end of each shift.

Data Entry into the State’s System

Accurately input customer information and transaction details into the state’s registration and licensing system.

Document Verification and Fraud Prevention

Review and verify authenticity of documents presented for vehicle registration and titling, including titles, proof of identity, and proof of ownership.

Utilize state tools and guidelines to confirm validity of documents and detect fraud such as forged signatures or altered titles.

Training and Certification

Complete 8 weeks of state-required RTS training before beginning duties at the service window.

Shadow Lead Deputy Specialists and Managers to learn tasks.

Apply knowledge gained to real‑world customer transactions upon training completion.

Requirements – Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited institution within the U.S.

Current auto experience within the Tax Office.

Minimum of 6 months customer service experience, including cash handling from retail, banking, or a similar environment.

Minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

General knowledge of vehicle registration.

Willingness to learn and acquire in-depth knowledge of the state’s RTS system over 8 weeks of training.

Basic knowledge of fraud prevention and documentation authentication.

Basic knowledge of handling cash, balancing registers, and basic financial reporting.

Understanding of customer service principles and techniques to effectively serve customers and manage interactions.

Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy in handling transactions, verifying documents, and maintaining records.

Communication skills to explain complex registration requirements in simple terms.

Customer service skills and ability to handle challenging interactions.

Time management to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

Mathematical skills, 10‑key entry skills, computer proficiency.

Adherence to confidentiality requirements regarding customer and department information.

May provide branch support at other offices as needed.

Preferences

Minimum of 6 months auto experience within the Tax Office and successful completion of formal auto training.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Office environment with adequate lighting, ventilation, and normal temperature and noise levels.

Minor physical effort required; may involve long periods of standing, walking, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs.

Possible attendance at outside training seminars and conferences.

Work assignments are diversified, requiring problem‑solving skills and basic tool use.

Position Type and Typical Hours

7:30 am – 4:30 pm; subject to overtime and weekends.

Training Locations (up to 8 weeks)

Downtown – 1001 Preston St., Houston, TX 77002

Cypress Hill – 4290 Cypress Hill Dr., Spring, TX 77388
