Summary
The Payroll Supervisor is responsible for overseeing payroll operations for a large and diverse workforce, ensuring accurate and timely processing for both union and non-union employees. This role requires deep knowledge of Arizona labor laws, federal regulations, and collective bargaining agreements. The supervisor will lead payroll staff, manage compliance, and collaborate across departments to maintain payroll integrity and resolve issues efficiently.
What You’ll Do
Oversee the daily workflow of the payroll team.
Supervise bi-weekly payroll processing for 5,000+ employees, including regular wages, overtime, bonuses, and deductions; manage updates for new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
Ensure compliance with federal, state (Arizona), and local payroll laws and best practices, including union contract provisions.
Provide guidance to payroll employees in handling complex problems and escalated disputes.
Maintain and audit payroll records for internal and external reviews.
Oversee W-2 reporting, garnishments, direct deposit issues, and deductions.
Collaborate with Labor Relations, Compensation, Benefits, Taxes, and Talent Acquisition to resolve payroll discrepancies and ensure policy interpretation and compliance.
Conduct performance evaluations; lead team meetings and provide coaching to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Reconcile payroll inputs with timekeeping data and resolve escalated issues.
Research, prepare, and present reports, manuals, and correspondence required by management or governmental agencies; prepare payroll reports for Finance, Accounting, and HR, including labor cost analysis and accruals.
Support audits and provide documentation for internal, external, and regulatory reviews.
Stay current with payroll laws, trends, and regulatory changes.
Recruit, interview, hire, and coordinate training for payroll staff.
Resolve employee questions regarding policies and procedures; develop or update procedures, policies, or standards as needed to improve accuracy, compliance, and processes.
Make recommendations to Senior Manager regarding staffing decisions or procedural changes.
Performs other duties as assigned.
What It Takes To Succeed
Previous experience in a lead or supervisory role is preferred.
Strong knowledge of Arizona labor and payroll tax laws and federal payroll regulations is preferred.
Experience with union payroll and interpreting collective bargaining agreements is preferred.
Strong knowledge of payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Workday, Workforce, SAP Employee Central Payroll) and timekeeping platforms is preferred; SAP experience is highly preferred.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; Advanced Excel skills are preferred.
Excellent organizational and communication skills with keen attention to detail.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and to organize a diverse workload, work independently, and meet deadlines.
Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods.
A degree with a specialization in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or a relevant field is preferred.
Functional Payroll Certification (FPC) from the American Payroll Association or equivalent is preferred.
Experience
Minimum 6 years of relevant experience required.
Education Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution that prepares the employee for the assignment.
Hybrid Workplace SRP currently offers a hybrid workplace, allowing telework up to three days per week for roles that can be performed remotely. All employees must live and work in Arizona.
