Newark Academy, a distinguished independent school with a 250-year legacy of innovative, relationship-centered teaching and learning, invites nominations and applications for the position of Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
This is an ideal opportunity for a seasoned financial and operational leader to join a mission-driven institution at a pivotal moment — one defined by strategic renewal, deepened community engagement, and a bold commitment to educational excellence.
Located in Livingston, New Jersey, just 20 miles west of New York City, Newark Academy offers the best of both worlds: a serene, 68-acre campus that fosters reflection and connection, and proximity to one of the world’s most dynamic urban centers.
A co-ed independent day school serving approximately 675 students in grades 6–12, Newark Academy is known for its rigorous academic programs, vibrant arts and athletics, and a culture that values curiosity, integrity, and global citizenship.
The school is home to one of the nation’s premier International Baccalaureate (IB) programs and is guided by a new Head of School, but longtime community leader, Tom Ashburn, whose leadership is marked by a joyful and respectful school culture, strategic programmatic growth, and a steadfast commitment to diversity, inclusion, and student-centered learning.
The CFO will join Newark Academy at an exciting time. With a forward-looking strategic plan in motion and a Board of Trustees committed to long-term sustainability and innovation, the school seeks a financial executive who can continue to elevate its financial stewardship and operational excellence.
Reporting directly to the Head of School and working closely with the Board, the CFO will serve as a key institutional leader and strategic partner — overseeing finance, campus master planning, campus safety and risk management, and providing strategic guidance to human resources and all campus operations.
The successful CFO at Newark Academy will be a:
Strategic Architect
who sees the big picture and builds resilient, future-ready financial frameworks that support innovation and long-term sustainability.
Financial Storyteller
who translates complexity into clarity, inspiring confidence and understanding across the Board, faculty, staff, and families.
Collaborative Leader
who fosters trust, builds strong relationships, and cultivates a high-performing team rooted in service and shared purpose.
An Operational Optimizer
who enhances systems and processes with precision, creativity, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

whose decisions reflect Newark Academy’s values, culture, and enduring commitment to excellence, inclusion, and community.
