Overview
This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Protective Service (FPS). Locations include Atlanta, GA; Detroit, MI; Fort Snelling, MN; Indianapolis, IN; Nashville, TN. Open to competitive service applicants. Salary ranges from $73,939 to $127,082 per year, based on locality and grade level upon selection. Initial closing date is 11/07/2025 or when 200 applications are received, whichever comes first. Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to apply the full range of investigative knowledge, skills, and abilities to conduct a wide range of complex, sensitive, national criminal investigations concerning major violations of Federal law. Serves as case agent for interagency investigations and may lead teams of criminal investigators and other law enforcement officers. Advise and guide lower-graded investigators on investigative techniques related to homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, threats, fraud, embezzlement, weapons, explosives violations, and other Federal violations. Conduct and coordinate multi-stage investigations involving individuals, groups, or large organizations at regional or national levels. Prepare complex law enforcement reports and coordinate working groups on significant activities and intelligence issues. Requirements

Successful completion of a background investigation (may include credit check and review of financial issues, as well as criminal offenses and illegal drug use). Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959 (or exemption). One-year probationary period may be required. Time-in-Grade requirements may apply; pre-employment drug test; random drug testing is required. Pre-employment documentation and forms as required; DHS uses e-Verify for work eligibility. Direct deposit of pay is required; license to operate a motor vehicle required; pre-employment physical required. Non-bargaining unit position; may be designated as essential personnel; travel up to 25% (1–5 nights per month). Qualifications

– One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09, including: Conducting interrogations and interviews to develop investigative leads. Collecting and examining facts and evidence in criminal investigations. Evaluating criminal intelligence using investigative techniques. Preparing investigative reports to communicate findings. OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three years of graduate education leading to a Ph.D., with transcripts required. OR a combination of qualifying experience and graduate education. GS-12
– One year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11, including: Conducting criminal investigations with adherence to legal standards. Providing guidance to trainee investigators. Identifying criminal trends to develop leads and present findings. Presenting findings to management, courts, or juries.
