Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in growing publication opportunities for scholarship written in or on the topic of Olelo Hawaii, work with students to develop and translate their research for various NHSS student publication work;

Assist in the development of curriculum for various Kapa'akea programs and NHSS Outreach initiatives;

Assists with the development, implementation, and assessment of college retention activities, such as program recruitment, program presentations, college and career readiness programs, field trips, peer advising, tutoring, and research projects;

Assists the faculty and staff team with the development and implementation of various 'olelo Hawaii co-curricular programming, including workshops, webinars and forums for undergraduate students wishing to conduct research with olelo Hawaii sources;

Assists with the faculty and staff team with the development and implementation of outreach programming geared toward recruitment Hawaiian language immersion schools;

Assist in coordinating olelo Hawaii tutoring program for undergraduate students taking olelo Hawaii courses;

Designs and implements trainings and olelo Hawaii workshops around financial aid, registration, scholarships, research tools, and writing development for undergraduate students who attended Hawaiian language immersion schools;

Serve as a liaison between NHSS and various NHSS partners, providing meeting coordination and record-keeping support, workshop design and materials and program coordination;

The GRA will also work collaboratively with Native Hawaiian Student Services and will perform other duties as assigned;

Support Native Hawaiian Student Services events and assist with general administrative tasks;

Designs and implements student workshops, trainings, presentations, and other events;

Assists the faculty and staff team with the development and implementation of programming and support through the Kapaakea Student Scholar Centers;

Assists with administrative functions such as processing purchase orders and payments to vendors, tracking program participants, and communicating with partners.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a BA in Hawaiian Language, Hawaiian Studies, Ethnic Studies or any related discipline;

Strong organizational, writing and communication skills;

Demonstrated proficiency in olelo Hawaii,

Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and students;

Knowledge of Hawaiian language and culture.

Applicants must be enrolled full-time at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in a graduate degree (Masters or PhD) program under the University of Hawaii at Manoa Office of Graduate Education at the time of hire and throughout the appointment period, and be in good academic standing and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Applicant needs to be able to work independently and reliably within a team.

Must be available during the summer, some evenings and weekends.

Desirable Qualifications

BA or MA in Hawaiian Language. Hawaiian Studies, or related discipline with substantial background in Hawaiian studies and language;

Demonstrated experience working with kaiapuni schools (public Hawaiian language immersion schools), Hawaiian language immersion education and Hawaiian cultural-based learning;

Demonstrated university teaching experience;

Demonstrated experience in organizing and implementing service learning and civic engagement programs in Native Hawaiian communities;

Prior work experience on a University of Hawaii campus;

Experience with student academic and/or career counseling;

Demonstrated experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Pages, iMovie, and Photoshop software; familiarity with Native Hawaiian Student Services initiatives;

Knowledge of University of Hawaii System including its academic policies; and knowledge of the educational needs of Native Hawaiian students.
