Base Salary Information

Weights and Measures Inspector Trainee: $24.15 per hour

Weights and Measures Inspector 1: $27.46 per hour

Weights and Measures Inspector 2: $31.54 per hour

What You Will Be Doing Perform tests on scales and meters to ensure compliance with Alaska's Weights and Measures Act. Test, inspect, and enforce standards for commercial sales in industries such as fishing, mining, construction, fuel, and more.

As a Trainee: supervised on‑job training and limited device types.

As an Inspector 1: full range of testing for all device types, with supervised training on larger/complex types.

As an Inspector 2: full range of testing for all device types, instruction and training to Trainees and Inspectors 1.

Qualifications by Level Weights and Measures Inspector Trainee

High School Diploma or equivalent.

One‑year experience in:

Installation, maintenance, or repair of weighing/ measuring devices;

Installation, maintenance, or repair of liquid measuring devices;

Employment using commercial weighing or measuring devices.

Class B or A Alaska Commercial Driver’s License required (conditional hire approval possible within 180 days).

Physical: moderate lifting up to 50 lb.

Weights and Measures Inspector 1

Possession of an Alaska commercial driver’s license (Type A or B).

EITHER:

One year of weights and measures inspection experience with the State of Alaska or equivalent;

Satisfactory completion of the departmental training program;

Three years of experience in installation, maintenance, or repair of weighing/ measuring devices or liquid measuring devices or managerial experience in the wholesale or retail food industry.

Weights and Measures Inspector 2

Possession of an Alaska commercial driver’s license (Type A or B).

EITHER:

Two years of weights and measures inspection experience with the State of Alaska or equivalent;

Four years of experience in installation, maintenance, or repair of weighing/ measuring devices or liquid measuring devices or managerial experience in the wholesale or retail food industry.

Other Requirements

Type A or B commercial driver’s license required. Employees holding the license will be subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

At interview, applicants must submit:

Three professional references with contact information;

Two most recent performance evaluations;

A copy of the Commercial Driver’s License (if available).

Working Environment Fairbanks. Work may involve remote locations and urban centers; adapt to rugged terrain and extreme weather. Responsibilities include maintaining roads, bridges, airports, ports, and public facilities.
