Position Summary The Controller is a key member of the Sanford Burnham Prebys financial management team and directs the full cycle accounting function for the institute. Key responsibilities include collaborating on the annual budget process, annual audited financial statements and related tax filings processes, managing compliance with regulatory and reporting requirements, developing and monitoring strong internal controls, preparing/updating department policies, strategic financial decision‑making, reviewing grants and contracts, and providing management oversight to a professional team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develops and administers financial plans and policies, accounting practices, and procedures to ensure financial and strategic goals are attained.

Supervises a professional team of specialists, accountants, analysts, and managers.

Prepares and delivers financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and 2 CFR 200, including note disclosures, and other necessary documentation for audit purposes.

Assists CFO and other staff in the preparation of the annual budget process with all departments, monthly financial statements, quarterly forecasts, and forecast to budget variance reporting.

Assists CFO in preparing and presenting Finance and Audit Committee meeting materials with annual departmental budgets, quarterly financial reporting, and audit reports including corresponding tax filings.

Develops and monitors internal controls to ensure compliance with OMB, IRS, DOL, UPMIFA, sponsored agency requirements, and prudent management objectives.

Prepares and delivers external reporting to banks, bond rating agencies, WASC, donor stewardship reports, sponsored agencies, etc.

Oversees treasury function to include cash management, post-bond compliance, and endowment oversight and compliance.

Reviews and approves payments and procurement over $5K up to $100K ensuring proper budget approvals and coding.

Communicates and collaborates with auditors, addressing any key issues or inquiries in a professional and timely manner.

Directs the payroll functions for the institute.

Prepares Board of trustees committee meeting materials.

Approves and signs for filing all annual and quarterly federal and state payroll and property tax filings.

Ensures compliance with unrelated business income rules and annual measurement of private business use.

Directs final FYE close and reporting processes including review of departmental accounts, approving reconciliations of certain general ledger accounts, and FYE journal entries.

Oversees Annual Indirect Cost Rate negotiations with DHHS Program Support Center (PSC) in coordination with CFO and other staff.

Participates and assists in the preparation of the Institute's annual insurance renewals.

Participates in health insurance renewal meetings and reviews proposed premiums and benefits.

Special projects may be assigned as deemed appropriate by the CFO and senior leadership team.

Minimum Qualifications Education : Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration. Graduate degree in related field preferred.

Experience :

Minimum 10-15 years of experience in full cycle general accounting, preferably within non-profit organizations.

Minimum 5 years in accounting management roles, preferably at the assistant controller/director level or higher within a non-profit organization.

Certifications, Licenses, etc : CPA is highly desired but not required.

Other Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities

Excellent understanding of GAAP particularly as it applies to nonprofit organizations.

An understanding of 2 CFR 200 is highly desirable.

Strong skills working within complex ERP systems, accounting system implementations and/or administration is desirable.

Advanced Excel skills are required.

Must work collaboratively across the administrative and scientific departments.

Must have strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Proven success in mentoring and developing staff at all levels.

When working on-site, the work environment is in a standard office setting. Physical Requirements Ability to execute those physical activities required to perform the essential functions including, but not limited to, regular sitting and being mobile; continual communicating both in person and on the telephone; regular keyboarding; regular reading of both print and digital material; and all other activities required to perform essential functions.

Compensation The expected hiring range for this position is $190k - $220k/annually commensurate with experience.
