Advanced Desktop Systems Engineer General Description:

The Advanced Desktop Systems Engineer is responsible for the College’s enterprise desktop management solutions including EndPoint Configuration Manager, Intune, JAMF, and other third‑party systems. This position supports the deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various desktop technologies across diverse solutions (laptops, desktops, Macs, iPads, Raspberry Pi, and VDI) using central management tools such as Microsoft EndPoint Configuration Manager, Intune, Windows Update Services, Active Directory/Group Policy, JAMF, Labstats, Splashtop, and other cloud services.

Duties and Tasks

Administers, designs, and maintains the desktop management infrastructure based on the College’s need to maintain a robust automation system for standardization and security of desktops.

Recommends and implements technologies and processes that improve the effectiveness of desktop engineering and automation processes.

Serves as technical lead on IT project implementations related to end‑user desktop technologies including security updates, operating system upgrades, Microsoft productivity software and other third‑party applications and overall configuration of client computers.

Ensures baseline configurations are compliant with security best practices and NVCC IT policies.

Works in collaboration with peers in advanced desktop engineering, server, network, application, security and campus IT teams to install, configure, optimize, monitor, and troubleshoot issues in the enterprise environment.

Adheres to change and incident management processes as it relates to the modification of the production environment to remediate and/or optimize enterprise systems.

Documents processes, establishes standards, and recommends improvements and solutions to ensure the health and optimization of the desktop management and end‑user computing environments.

Serves as a subject matter expert and escalation point for junior engineers, campus IT, and other internal IT teams as it relates to advanced desktop management and other end‑user desktop technologies.

Mentors, provides knowledge transfer, and training to campus IT staff.

Required KSAs

Knowledge of the Microsoft Windows Server/Desktop Operating System, Endpoint Configuration Manager, Intune, Active Directory, and Group Policy Management.

Knowledge of the MacOS, iPadOS, and iOS Operating System, JAMF, and JAMF Protect.

Knowledge of current and developing desktop management technologies and ability to analyze technology for use in current environment.

Advanced analytical and problem resolution skills.

Client‑centric and able to work in a variety of environments.

Must be able to manage customer relationships.

Ability to effectively communicate with senior management, technical peers, vendors, and users. Strong verbal and written communications skills.

Ability to work in a team environment to accomplish organizational objectives.

General knowledge of networking concepts, technologies, structured database and application/web servers.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience with Microsoft Endpoint Configuration, Intune administration, engineering, architecture and design.

Experience with MacOS, iPadOS, and iOS administration, engineering, architecture and design using JAMF and/or Intune.

Experience with Microsoft operating system, MacOS, and application packaging using enterprise management tools.

Customer support and training experience.

Additional Considerations

Experience with Microsoft advanced desktop management system (EndPoint Configuration Manager/Intune) administration, engineering, architecture and design.

Experience with MacOS, iPadOS, iOS administration, engineering, architecture and design using JAMF and/or Intune.

Experience with Microsoft operating system, MacOS, and application packaging using enterprise management tools.

Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server, Windows Operating System.

Knowledge of MacOS and iOS.

Experience with Microsoft Active Directory configuration including Group Policy in a large and complex production environments as it relates to the management of computer objects and user settings.

Experience with Operating System Deployment (OSD) including image builds, analysis, and troubleshooting automation tasks and security baselines.

Demonstrated understanding of network principles (such as network topologies, network addressing schemes, subnets, firewalls, and security segregation).

Demonstrated understanding of IT security best practices including mitigation and remediation strategies at an enterprise‑level.

Microsoft Certifications (MCTS, MCIT, MSCE), Jamf Pro certs are a plus.
