Purpose of the Position The Middle School Outreach Coordinator (MSOC) will assist middle school students by providing advising services that help them identify career interests and pursue post‑secondary educational opportunities.
Primary Responsibilities
Hold multiple group meetings at schools.
Develop an Individualized Service Plan for each participant.
Develop and provide workshops for participants and their parents.
Maintain participant files on services provided.
Assist participants with career assessment and research.
Provide supervision for all field trips and program activities.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Director.
Participant Responsibilities
Participate in the identification and recruitment of students for Talent Search services.
Implement project‑approved career interest and non‑cognitive assessment.
Hold a minimum of eight group meetings and individual meetings during the school year to assist students with planning their educational goals.
Connect students to approved tutoring services to enable successful completion of coursework.
Provide 8th‑grade students with college admissions test information – PSAT.
Program Responsibilities
Assist with the calendar of excursions to open house activities of colleges and universities during the academic year.
Assist with the development and implementation of the middle school mentoring component of the Scholar’s Saturday Academy.
Assist in identifying middle school students for participation in youth leadership development programs.
Assist with preparing two project newsletters (August and March) to distribute to students, parents, school personnel, community partners, and the WCC community.
Assist with the development and implementation of project excursions to colleges, universities, cultural events, academic programs, and other activities not usually available to middle school disadvantaged youth.
WCC Responsibilities
Provide required in‑service and online training to ensure effective and professional educational service delivery.
Participate in WCC committees, on‑campus activities, and all activities geared toward pre‑college students.
Engage in appropriate training and professional development activities for the benefit of participants, parents, the WCC community, and community‑at‑large.
Assist with Wytheville Community College activities benefiting community members.
Additional Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned or to assist the agency or state government during emergency declarations.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, higher education, or a relevant field related to project objectives.
Good written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work with low‑income, potential first‑generation college students.
Professional/personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting project participants.
Additional Considerations
Professional experience in pre‑college TRiO programs or similar programs.
Knowledge and/or advocacy experience with disadvantaged communities.
Professional knowledge of college admissions and financial aid processes.
Ability to maintain appropriate and professional boundaries with students and their parents, and within all professional settings.
Ability to work independently with key target school contacts and community stakeholders.
Transportation & Travel State vehicle operation: Yes Supervises employees: No Required travel: Will be required to travel to area middle schools/high schools and for training.
