Assistant Director, Institutional Research Working Title: Assistant Director, Institutional Research. Role Title: Policy and Planning Manager I. Role Code 19135‑SW. FLSA Status: Exempt. Pay Band 05. Position Number: 29300089. Agency: Virginia Peninsula Community College. Division: Virginia Peninsula Community College. Work Location: Hampton - 650. Hiring Range: $78,000-88,000. Employment: Full Time. Telework options: subject to change.

Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8 am – 5 pm; some evenings and weekends may be required.

The Assistant Director of Institutional Research serves a pivotal role in advancing institutional effectiveness as the lead analyst, subject‑matter expert, and a strategic partner to the Director. The Assistant Director is responsible for leading complex research projects, overseeing data governance, and providing timely, accurate, and actionable data and insights to inform institutional decision‑making and planning, satisfy external reporting requirements, and support institutional effectiveness and equitable student outcomes. The Assistant Director supervises the Research Analyst(s) and supports the Director as needed.

Duties

Team Leadership and Mentorship – supervise and mentor the Research Analyst(s), provide guidance on projects, conduct quality‑assurance reviews, and foster professional development.

Data Management and Governance – lead collegiate institutional research activities, including development and maintenance of datasets, models, and data‑integrity checks; support institutional data governance and ensure data quality.

Research, Analytics, and Reporting – design and execute complex data analyses, including strategic research projects, external reporting (e.g., IPEDS), and ad‑hoc data requests.

Data Visualization and Communication – oversee development of interactive dashboards, reports, and data visualizations that translate complex findings into clear, concise, actionable insights; present information and collaborate across the institution to enhance data literacy.

Other duties as assigned, including serving on college committees.

Special Assignments May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's / Required Qualifications

Extensive experience in data analytics and interpreting data.

Demonstrated experience and progressive responsibilities within institutional research or a related data‑analysis field.

Experience with external reporting to federal and state agencies, grants, accreditors, and other reporting bodies.

Extensive experience working with relational databases and programming in SQL, SAS, or other related languages (e.g., R, SPSS, Python).

Experience with PowerBI or other data‑visualization technology.

Knowledge

Thorough knowledge of quantitative research methods and both descriptive and inferential statistics.

Thorough knowledge of data analytics and the use of data to answer questions and solve problems.

Knowledge of data governance, data privacy, and ethical data use.

Skills

Strong research and analytical problem‑solving skills.

Advanced proficiency in extracting and manipulating data from relational databases.

Expertise in SAS or similar statistical programming languages (e.g., SQL, R, SPSS, Python).

Excellent data‑visualization skills.

Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

High level of attention to detail with a focus on thoroughness and quality.

Strong report‑writing and presentation skills.

Ability to

Lead and conduct research projects and apply analytical and evaluative techniques, formulate conclusions, and make recommendations.

Work independently, manage multiple projects, and prioritize appropriately.

Effectively communicate complex findings to non‑technical audiences.

Travel and work at all campus locations.

Additional Considerations

Experience working in a higher education setting.

Experience working in a community college setting.

Experience with predictive modeling and machine‑learning techniques.
