What you will be doing

Professionally maintain all heavy‑duty and light‑duty equipment and vehicles used for construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other agency vehicles.

Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods. Perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.

Diagnose, maintain, repair and modify the following systems: transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems (air and electrical) for light and heavy‑duty equipment.

Work Environment This position is in the Valdez shop, 0.5 mile of Richardson Highway. Travel in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations is possible, including day trips and overnight stays.

Who we are looking for

Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.

Flexibility: Openness to change, rapid adaptation to new information and unexpected obstacles.

Vehicle Maintenance: Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.

Self‑Management: Sets realistic goals, works with minimal supervision, demonstrates initiative, effort, commitment, and responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications Vacancies in this job class are filled through Union referral, except for promotions, demotions, transfers, and emergency appointments.

Additional Required Information

A copy of your Class A CDL, front and back (if applicable).

Three (3) professional references, including name, title, and phone number.

Commercial Driver’s License Required The position requires a valid Class A Alaska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Candidates without a CDL must acquire one within 120 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect.

Drug and Alcohol Policy Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and CANNOT start work in a CDL position until a pre‑employment drug test is cleared.

Tool Allowance Employees must supply their own hand tools. A monthly tool allowance will be paid; the manager will discuss details after hire.

Work Experience Provide employer name, job title, dates of employment, and full‑time/part‑time status if applicable.

Education Submit transcripts to verify educational credentials used for minimum qualifications. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable if institution name is listed.

Foreign Education Foreign credentials may be used if they are deemed equivalent by an accredited organization. Provide evidence of equivalency.
