Attention All Applicants:

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead to help keep Alaska moving.

What you will be doing

Professionally maintain all heavy‑duty and light‑duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other user agency vehicles in the area.

Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods; perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.

Diagnose, maintain, repair and modify the following systems: transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, brakes (including air and electrical) for light and heavy‑duty equipment.

The working environment This position is in the Valdez shop at .5 Mile of Richardson Highway. Travel in small planes to remote locations is possible, including day trips and overnight stays. DOT&PF employees work in various locations, addressing a wide range of transportation needs with adaptability and resourcefulness.

Who we are looking for We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

Mechanical:

Knowledge of machines and tools, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.

Flexibility:

Open to change and new information; rapidly adapts to changing conditions or unexpected obstacles.

Vehicle Maintenance:

Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including design, use, repair and maintenance.

Self‑Management:

Sets goals, demonstrates initiative, works with minimal supervision, and shows responsible behavior.

Required documentation and prerequisites

A copy of your Class A CDL, front and back (if applicable).

Three (3) professional references – include name, title and phone number.

Supplemental questions This recruitment uses a supplemental questionnaire as part of the application process. Answers will be used to determine which applicants advance to the interview phase.

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) requirements This position requires a Class A CDL. A conditional hire may be given to applicants who do not yet possess a Class A CDL, with the requirement to obtain it within 120 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect.

Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and cannot start work in a CDL position until pre‑employment drug testing is completed and the Clearinghouse is checked. The state maintains the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.

Tool allowance: Employees in this position are required to provide their own hand tools and will receive a monthly tool allowance, determined by the position and reviewed with the manager after hire.
