The University of South Florida (USF) and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM) are launching an open‑rank high level scientist in the field of virology. Essential functions of this position include carrying out research on viruses and viral diseases, publishing, obtaining high‑level grants (including NIH grants), serving as a Principal Investigator, leading a research group, contributing to faculty recruitment and mentoring USF scientists and MDs, developing philanthropic relationships, and contributing to strategic plans and recruitment priorities.

Location: 12901 Bruce B Downs Blvd, Tampa, FL, 33612, US.

Responsibilities

Carry out research in virology, publish, obtain high‑level grants including NIH R01s.

Serve as Principal Investigator and head of a research group.

Contribute to faculty recruitment and mentor USF scientists and MDs.

Develop philanthropic relationships and contribute to strategic research orientations.

Provide didactic, benchside, and bedside teaching of medical students, graduate students, post‑doctoral fellows, and college‑wide seminars.

Participate in training and mentoring of medical students/graduate students/postdoctoral scholars, sit on dissertation committees, and develop course curriculum.

Oversee grant writing and professional development in scholarly activities.

Represent the university, college/school, or department as required.

Essentially fulfil teaching, research, service, and administrative duties and report to a Chair or appropriate higher‑level administrator.

Qualifications

Doctoral degree (PhD, MD or MD/PhD) from an accredited institution.

Demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service.

Meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor.

For Associate/Full Professor: proven creative work, professional writing or research in refereed journals, recognized authority in the field.

10‑year history of continuous NIH funding or other high‑profile international grants; current NIH funding of at least one R01 and >$350,000 direct costs per year, or comparable international grants.

At least 5 papers with an impact factor above 15; H‑index >40; 10‑year experience as a principal investigator at a renowned research institute or university.
