Organization Overview
Founded in 2009 in Madison, Wisconsin, The Recovery Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to removing financial and cultural barriers to recovery from substance use and mental health disorders. To date, we’ve primarily served Dane County and surrounding areas. Recovery Foundation, in partnership with Recovery.com, is expanding its impact nationally through shared resources, expertise, and aligned missions. We fulfill our mission through two core pillars:
Scholarships:
Financial assistance for treatment and recovery housing support.
Stigma Reduction:
Community education and storytelling that normalize seeking treatment.
Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) is the chief leader, fundraiser, and strategist for The Recovery Foundation. The ED will guide the organization from a strong local nonprofit to a recognized national leader, with a primary focus on expanding scholarship capacity and scaling stigma‑reduction initiatives across the country. This is a hands‑on leadership role for a builder who combines vision, entrepreneurial drive, operational rigor, and a deep passion for recovery. Administrative Support: The ED will have limited administrative support provided.
Key Responsibilities
Vision & Strategy – Lead a 3–5 year strategic plan to expand scholarships and stigma‑reduction work from Dane County to national reach. Position the Foundation as a trusted voice in recovery philanthropy and education. Translate strategy into annual operating plans and budgets with clear milestones.
Fundraising & Resource Development – Architect and execute a national fundraising strategy across major gifts, grants, corporate partnerships, and individual giving. Build and manage a fundraising pipeline and portfolio; cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and partners. Ensure transparent reporting and donor communications.
Programs & Impact – Expand the treatment and recovery housing scholarship program nationally with rigorous processes for application, disbursement, and evaluation. Lead and grow stigma‑reduction initiatives (education, campaigns, storytelling, and events) that normalize seeking treatment. Define and track metrics; publish impact dashboards and outcomes to stakeholders.
Operations & Governance – Oversee day‑to‑day operations, finance, budgeting, and compliance with nonprofit regulations. Optimize shared services with Recovery.com and establish scalable systems (finance, HR, IT, data). Serve as primary liaison to the Board of Directors: provide updates, surface strategic decisions, support governance and board development.
External Relations & Advocacy – Represent the Foundation publicly at local, state, and national levels (speaking, media, coalitions). Cultivate partnerships with treatment providers, community leaders, and recovery organizations. Use storytelling and data to elevate the mission and expand reach.
Qualifications
Required: 7–10 years of leadership in nonprofit, philanthropy, behavioral health, or related fields. Demonstrated success in fundraising and scaling programs.
Strong financial and operational management skills, including budgeting and compliance. Excellent communication, relationship‑building, and public speaking skills.
Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment with limited support.
High “figure it out factor” and ability to scale quickly.
Deep commitment to recovery, mental health, and reducing stigma.
Preferred
Background in substance use disorder (SUD), behavioral health, or recovery advocacy.
Relationships with national funders, policymakers, or networks.
Experience building organizations from local to national scope.
Familiarity with nonprofit–corporate partnerships and shared‑services models.
Success Measures (First 12 Months)
Strategic plan approved; first annual operating plan and budget executed on‑time. $500k in new and recurring donations secured.
National scholarship program live in ≥ 10 new markets; equitable, compliant, and efficient disbursement.
Stigma‑reduction initiatives launched with measurable reach (impressions, engagements) and partner participation.
Core systems and reporting optimized or implemented (Donor CRM, finance/operations reporting, grants calendar, impact dashboard).
Positive stakeholder feedback (donor retention %, NPS/satisfaction from applicants and partners).
Compensation & Benefits – Salary: $90,000–$125,000, commensurate with experience.
Hybrid with office space at Recovery.com headquarters in downtown Madison, WI; some travel.
