Position Summary The Student Academic Specialist 3 serves as an assistant director for the Science Program at the Student Learning Center, supporting the development, coordination, and delivery of academic services for undergraduate students in the sciences. The role manages day‑to‑day operations, supervises and trains a team of undergraduate peer educators, assists with budget planning, and provides direct academic support. Under senior leadership guidance, the Specialist applies expertise in learning theory, peer pedagogy, and STEM education to enhance program offerings, mentor staff, and support initiatives that advance the center’s mission of fostering an inclusive, student‑centered learning environment.

Responsibilities

Coordinate day‑to‑day logistics to ensure smooth program functioning, including scheduling, workflow management, and troubleshooting.

Serve as the primary point of contact for student inquiries and collaborate with other program leads.

Design and facilitate training seminars that integrate learning theory, inclusive pedagogy, and subject‑specific strategies for peer educators.

Offer ongoing mentorship and performance feedback to foster tutor growth and instructional quality.

Provide direction, coaching, and regular feedback to professional team members.

Lead weekly check‑ins and performance evaluations to empower staff.

Engage in needs assessments and stay informed on trends in STEM education and student learning behaviors.

Use insights to pilot and evaluate new service models that promote academic success across diverse populations.

Contribute to annual budgeting by forecasting resource needs, monitoring expenses, and ensuring alignment with priorities.

Implement assessment tools and gather data to measure program effectiveness.

Collaborate with campus partners to expand programming and increase accessibility.

Lead or co‑lead innovation projects addressing emerging student needs.

Build and maintain relationships with faculty, academic advisors, and student support units.

Participate in campus events, panels, and committees to share resources and raise program awareness.

Contribute to cross‑program initiatives, offering insight, coordinating logistics, and implementing center‑wide goals.

Collaborate with colleagues to improve operations and align services with the center’s mission of equity and academic excellence.

Required Qualifications

Strong understanding of STEM learning theories, cognitive development, and discipline‑specific pedagogical strategies.

In‑depth knowledge of challenges and effective practices in science education, including conceptual barriers in biology, chemistry, and physics.

Experience developing and facilitating peer‑led learning environments in STEM contexts.

Familiarity with the structure and demands of the STEM curriculum at a research‑intensive institution.

Ability to design and assess academic support services for diverse student populations.

Knowledge of equity‑minded practices in STEM education.

Proficiency in training and mentoring undergraduate peer educators in STEM disciplines.

Strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills with a data‑informed decision‑making mindset.

Capacity to stay current with research in STEM education, learning sciences, and peer pedagogy.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.

Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University, please visit the University of California’s Compensation & Benefits website. Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The budgeted annual salary range is $90,000.00 – $100,800.00.

This is a full‑time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.

This is an exempt, monthly‑paid position.
