Fish Culturist 1
position open to Alaska residents only. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish, is seeking a full‑time permanent Fish Culturist 1 at the William Jack Hernandez Sportfish Hatchery in Anchorage.
This role is responsible for routine fish culture care for the Chinook and Coho salmon smolt in the recirculation systems. Work schedule: Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Key Responsibilities
Responsible for all Smolt Production Area’s functions in the absence of the Smolt Production Supervisor.
Training and overseeing one College Intern 2 and a two‑month Fish and Wildlife Technician 2, including participation in hiring and fish culture training.
Monitoring and managing fish health, water quality, and water treatment systems.
Performing monthly size samples and adjusting feeding rations.
Collecting eggs from Chinook and Coho salmon on‑site and at remote stream locations.
Daily fish culture routine: cleaning tanks and data entry.
Assisting other fish culture staff with hatchery activities such as transporting fish, gamete collection, and other rearing and incubation programs.
Purchasing and maintaining supplies and materials while adhering to project budgets and SOA procurement policies.
Working Conditions
Must be able to work Tuesday–Saturday as part of regular schedule; occasional holidays.
Overnight travel required for some stocking activities.
Must lift and carry 50 lbs.
Hire approval requires Class B Alaska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N‑Tanker endorsement within 12 months; also requires commercial driver’s license per federal regulations, drug‑test compliance, and commitment to state drug and alcohol policy.
Qualifications
Knowledge of hatchery operations.
Knowledge of water quality testing.
Experience collecting biological samples from fish (e.g., length, sex, otolith extraction, genetic samples).
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in fisheries science or closely related field.
Or four years of progressively responsible experience in aquaculture or mariculture or equivalent post‑secondary education (3 semester/4 quarter hours equals one month).
