Overview Full‑time, regular position located at Main Bay Hatchery (MBH), a remote, off‑grid sockeye salmon facility about 1 hour southeast of Whittier, AK by boat. The hatchery releases approximately 10–11 million smolt each year.

Wage Range:
$21.26 – $28.63/hour (determined based on experience)
Distinguishing Characteristics Senior working level of the fish culturist series. Incumbents manage hatchery projects, serve as acting manager in the absence of the Hatchery Manager and Assistant Manager, and may supervise technical personnel.
Responsibilities
Fish propagation: enumerate, care, kill, spawn, dispose of carcasses; prepare, clean and maintain incubators; monitor and maintain water quality; load, enumerate, pick and care for egg/alevin; rear, enumerate and set up out‑migration of fry; perform other general duties associated with fish culture operations.
Fish harvest: prepare, repair and maintain harvest equipment; load, transport, care for and unload harvest pens; collect and record fish harvest management data.
Prepare feeding and rearing schedules based on calculated growth rates; prepare feed; supervise and/or perform required feeding activities.
Establish fish loading densities, oxygen delivery levels, and water temperature control measures for fish transport via specialized containers.
Supervise and participate in egg‑taking, egg care, otolith marking, and out‑migration operations that meet prescribed performance standards.
Maintain and adjust calculated quantities, temperatures, and dissolved gas levels of water supplies to provide desired quality, quantity, and temperature to incubation and rearing units; take water samples; clean water and bacterial filters, ponds, troughs, tanks, incubators, screens, and work areas.
Analyze data, facts, and information; draw logical conclusions; perform data entry or analysis using computers and software.
Perform gross examination of fish for diseases or nutritional disorders and report results.
Operate and adjust hatchery apparatus such as pressurized water filters, automatic fish feeders, electronic egg and fish counters, electronic measuring devices, and ultraviolet and ozone depuration equipment.
Assist higher‑level operations staff in conducting various biological studies such as rearing, ecology observations, lake surveys, and marked fish recovery.
Takes samples from commercial fisheries catches for data on species, size, age and sex composition; collects scales, otoliths, ovaries or other biological specimens, scale mounting.
Perform simple functions in personnel, procurement and supply to maintain steady workflow for daily scheduled tasks; assist Hatchery Manager in supply procurement and quarterly ordering as it applies to project budgets.
Recommend procedures, techniques and new equipment to improve work efficiencies or adapt to new techniques.
Effectively interact with public and direct inquiries to appropriate department or persons.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of fish hatchery operations and procedures.
Principles and practices of aquaculture, collection and care of aquatic biological specimens.
Fish life in Alaska, including species, distribution and habitat requirements.
Methods of preparing fisheries development and improvement projects.
Data processing equipment and software.
Planning, organizing and conducting research principles.
Physical stamina for demanding work; routine maintenance of tools and equipment; minor repairs.
Analytical ability to evaluate biological data and draw conclusions.
Study design, data evaluation, and report preparation.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; conduct laboratory tests and maintain records.
Training and leading lower‑level technicians.
Public‑services etiquette.
Essential Functions Work performed at any hatchery or remote location as needed. Must be able to move freely outdoors in all weather, lift and carry 50 pounds, climb stairs and ladders, climb aboard and around vessels and small aircraft, work around water (docks, floats), and use telephones and computers. Must read, write, speak and understand English and have hearing and vision to receive instructions.
