The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish Culturist 1 located in Anchorage at William Jack Hernandez Sportfish Hatchery. What you will be doing

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish, is seeking a full-time permanent Fish Culturist 1 located at the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery. Primary duties include routine fish culture care for Chinook and Coho salmon smolt in recirculation systems. Work schedule: Tuesday through Saturday. Saturdays are unsupervised and require independent work, including responding to alarms and hatchery issues. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Manage all Smolt Production Area functions in the absence of the Smolt Production Supervisor. Train and oversee one College Intern 2 and a two-month Fish and Wildlife Technician 2; participate in hiring and training. Monitor and manage fish health, water quality, and water treatment systems. Perform monthly size samples and adjust feeding rations accordingly. Collect eggs from Chinook and Coho salmon on-site and at remote stream locations. Daily fish culture routine including cleaning tanks and data entry. Assist other hatchery staff with activities such as transporting fish, gamete collection, and other rearing/incubation programs. Based in Anchorage at William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery. Work schedule is Tuesday–Saturday, 8–4. Occasional holidays and overnight travel may be required. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Hire approval is conditional on obtaining a Class B Alaska CDL with N-Tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire. We offer a wide range of experiences, including Chinook and Coho egg takes, rearing salmon smolt in recirculation systems, and stocking fish in Southcentral Alaska. Who we are looking for

We seek individuals with knowledge, skills, and abilities including: Knowledge of hatchery operations. Knowledge of water quality testing. Experience collecting biological samples from fish (length, sex, otolith extraction, genetic samples). Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel and Word). Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with a major in fisheries science or a closely related field. Substitution: Four years of relevant work experience in aquaculture/mariculture and/or applicable post-secondary education may substitute for the bachelor’s degree (see substitution details in the original posting).
