ISSE/Systems Security Engineer (CORPIT)
Bowhead is seeking a skilled full‑time Systems Security Engineer to join our team in Dahlgren, VA. Candidates will have a strong background in computer networking concepts and protocols, as well as network security methodologies. The Systems Security Engineer will be responsible for identifying and mitigating vulnerabilities in security systems, conducting vulnerability scans, and applying system, network, and operating‑system hardening techniques.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct vulnerability scans and recognize vulnerabilities in security systems.
Use DoD network analysis tools to identify vulnerabilities (e.g., ACAS, HBSS).
Perform application vulnerability assessments.
Identify systemic security issues based on the analysis of vulnerability and configuration data.
Share meaningful insights about the organization’s threat environment to improve risk‑management posture.
Apply cybersecurity and privacy principles to organizational requirements (confidentiality, integrity, availability, authentication, non‑repudiation).
Troubleshoot and diagnose cyber‑defense infrastructure anomalies and work through resolution.
Required Skills
Proficiency in conducting vulnerability scans and using DoD network analysis tools.
Expertise in system, network, and OS hardening techniques.
Experience with application vulnerability assessments.
Ability to identify systemic security issues from vulnerability and configuration data.
Capability to share insights on threat context to enhance risk management.
Strong knowledge of cybersecurity and privacy principles.
Skill in host/network access controls, VPN devices, encryption, and securing network communications.
Experience securing networks against malware (NIPS, anti‑malware, device restrictions, spam filters).
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve cyber‑defense infrastructure anomalies.
Experience performing impact/risk assessments.
Knowledge of Pentest tools and frameworks (Tenable ACAS, Trellix ESS/HBSS).
Familiarity with intrusion detection/prevention systems and network security architecture concepts.
Baseline knowledge of operating systems: Unix/Linux, IOS, Android, Windows.
Knowledge of network protocols: TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, directory services.
Basic knowledge of application vulnerabilities and security risks.
Preferred Skills
Knowledge of cyber threats and vulnerabilities.
Understanding of specific operational impacts of cybersecurity lapses.
Knowledge of access control mechanisms (ACL, capabilities).
Experience with network traffic analysis and VPN security.
Familiarity with wireless and radio frequency communication (RFID, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, IR, cellular, satellite).
Experience with identity and access management (PKI, OAuth, OpenID, SAML, SPML).
Awareness of system and application security threats (buffer overflow, injection, race conditions, zero‑day exploits).
Knowledge of attack categories (passive, active, insider, pen‑test).
Qualifications
High School Diploma or Bachelor’s degree required; 5+ years of relevant experience.
Knowledge of computer networking concepts, protocols, and network security methodologies.
Knowledge of network security architecture concepts, defense‑in‑depth, and zero‑trust.
Experience with IDS/IPS tools and applications.
Knowledge of OS hardening techniques for Unix/Linux, IOS, Android, Windows.
Knowledge of system administration concepts for operating systems.
Required: DOD 8570 IAT Level II certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+ce).
Physical demands: lift up to 10 lbs., stand/walk prolonged periods, twist/bend/squat periodically.
Security clearance: must hold a Top Secret clearance; US citizenship required for TS clearance at this site.
