Connecticut Science Center
Serving more than 300,000 adults and children each year, the Connecticut Science Center is the state’s premier destination for informal science learning, a top tourist attraction, a hub for teacher training, and one of the state’s foremost resources for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The Development Department leads and implements the Science Center’s fundraising strategies and activities to secure the funding and relationships necessary to support its sustainability and growth. The Grants Manager is responsible for cultivating and stewarding vital, long‑term relationships with foundations, government entities, and other constituents, contributing to the success of the Connecticut Science Center’s ambitious goals for donated income through thoughtful analytical skills, attention to detail, outstanding communication skills, and a hard‑work ethic with a variety of fundraising assignments from institutional funders. The Grants Manager also plays a pivotal role with internal constituents, particularly Programs, to develop funding requests and other materials, as required.
Key Responsibilities
Manage the organization’s financial operations including oversight of day-to-day accounting functions, accounts payable, accounts receivable, maintenance of the general ledger and banking
Review and post all journal entries
Prepare, analyze and present financial statements reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements to senior leadership
Manage and perform annual budgeting, forecasting and planning processes, administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and produce monthly budget versus actual reports
Manage organizational cash flow and cash forecasting
Manage annual audit, coordinate activities with outside accounting firm, review firm’s performance
Calculate annual use of investments for operations and prepare monthly investment summary report
Serve as backup to Finance Manager, a direct report to the Director of Finance, during absences
Monitor and maintain internal controls while overseeing financial systems and related compliance requirements
Working with the Development Team, produce financial reports for foundation and other grants as needed
Working with the HR department assist in processing bi‑weekly payroll
Prepare monthly inventory and financial reports for the Gift Shop
Update and implement all necessary written business and accounting practices as needed
Contribute analysis and collaborate in preparation of near‑ and longer‑term capital needs assessment as needed
Work in partnership with the Vice President Administration to support other administration functions including, but not limited to human resources, information technology, on‑site partners, and insurance
Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field required
Working knowledge of GAAP, audits and other regulatory requirements in the financial field
5+ years relevant work in non‑profit finance management and accounting or equivalent roles desired
Expert computer skills, including Microsoft office, with power‑user proficiency in Excel
Eye for detail and accuracy is imperative
Excellent organizational, verbal and written skills
Ability to multi‑task, work in a fast‑paced environment and meet short deadlines
Ability to work independently
Ability to work with confidential information and exercise discretion and judgment
Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and dedication
Experience in Human Resources, Information Technology and other administrative functions a plus
Expected to gain proficiency in the following softwares currently used by the finance department including, but not limited to: Abila MIP, Tessitura, Clover, EZ Content Manager, Adaptive Budgeting and Reporting
Ability and expectation to work on site
Physical Requirements
Repetitive movement of hands and fingers – typing and/or writing
Reach with hands and arms, twist, bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch
Ability to lift and/or move 10 pounds
Moderate to long periods of standing and sitting for several hours in duration are required
Consistently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
