Assistant Controller, Real Estate Accounting
Location:
Bethesda, Columbia, or Baltimore, MD (Hybrid – 1-2 days per week in office)
Job Summary A real estate nonprofit organization is seeking an Assistant Controller to support accounting operations for its development, asset management, and property management functions. This role will focus on consolidations and multi-entity accounting and reports to the Controller.
Responsibilities
Maintain books and records for multiple entities
Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close
Prepare consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules
Coordinate with external auditors
Prepare schedules for tax filings
Support accounting for real estate transactions (pre-development, acquisitions, dispositions, consolidations)
Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules
Manage intercompany accounting and reconciliations
Mentor junior accounting staff
Ensure compliance with internal controlsAssist with accounting policy updates and process improvements
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or advanced degree preferred
5‑7 years of accounting/finance experience (3+ years considered for strong candidates)
Experience with multi‑entity consolidations and GAAP
Public accounting and real estate/partnership accounting experience preferred
Advanced Excel skills required, Workday experience a plus
Strong communication and organizational skills
