Position Summary
A Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. The role supports Barksdale AFB, Columbus AFB, Keesler AFB, Maxwell AFB, and Claiborne Range. The analyst will work full‑time at Barksdale ISS and will travel up to a week at a time to support assigned Air Force bases.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain environmental GIS data for five U.S. Air Force bases.
Ensure all data conforms to the SDSFIE standards, metadata requirements, and passes quality control checks.
Provide GIS support, including cartographic support, data requests, and data analysis.
Engage with Air Force environmental Program Managers and staff on a routine basis, reviewing data and providing status updates.
Collect and evaluate existing spatial and aspatial data from disparate sources, perform field data collection using GPS, rectify aerial photography, and digitize features from imagery.
Conduct periodic travel (up to one week per trip, twice per year per remote base) to deliver updates, review data, and provide support services.
Prepare monthly reporting requirements.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of a BS or BA in computer science, information technology, geographic information systems, geography, environmental science, or related fields.
Three years of demonstrated GIS work experience (coursework not counted).
Experience with environmental GIS, Esri’s ArcGIS software, and cartography.
Experience applying spatial data standards, data development, and data maintenance.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively, taking initiative to resolve issues.
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Travel ability: up to one week per trip, twice per year to each remote Air Force Base.
Pass DoD federal background check to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC).
Fieldwork capability: walking long distances in adverse terrain, carrying supplies up to 45 lbs.
Valid driver’s license by employment start date.
Legal authorization to work in the United States by the proposed start date (no visa sponsorship).
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a highly structured organization.
Knowledge of military instructions, directives, guidance, and environmental regulations.
Experience with:
U.S. Air Force GeoBase program.
Geospatial documentation and metadata.
Geospatial Standards: Spatial Data Standards for Facility, Infrastructure, and Environment (SDSFIE) and ISO or FGDC standards.
Disseminating information to stakeholders and public or private entities.
Field data collection methods, including GPS equipment and post‑processing of data.
Existing National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) highly desired.
