Position Summary Colorado State University (CSU) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) are hiring a Senior Wildlife Biologist to support installation needs at Beale Air Force Base (AFB), California.
This field‑ and office‑based role will manage implementation of projects identified in the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP), focusing on avian identification, data collection, habitat analysis, and project management.
The incumbent will interpret Air Force natural resource policies, oversee CEMML staff and subcontractor activities, and provide advanced biological knowledge and judgment in the field.
Required Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology or related area AND at least 5 years of post‑degree experience in field biology (wildlife issues including species biology, habitat requirements, and ecology, especially for endangered species) OR a Master’s degree with 3 years of post‑graduate experience.
Strong California avian background with experience conducting surveys for burrowing owl, black rail, tricolored blackbird, and/or Swainson’s hawk, plus experience with all‑species point counts for songbirds.
Experience performing wildlife surveys in central/northern California or nearby areas.
Experience in writing and reviewing survey memos and technical reports.
Knowledge of federal, state and local environmental laws (Sikes Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, NEPA).
Proficiency with ArcGIS 10.6+ or ArcPro, including map composition, data analysis, and metadata preparation.
Ability to work in harsh environments (temps >100°F in summer, near‑freezing in winter) and walk long distances on uneven ground.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated experience on military lands and supporting ILMLP development and DoD projects.
Compliance with Common Access Card (CAC) requirements.
Legal authorization to work in the United States by the proposed start date.
No visa sponsorship will be provided.
Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one by position start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
Master’s degree in wildlife biology or related field with at least 5 years of experience in field biology.
Experience providing avian management recommendations.
Experience planning, conducting, presenting, and tracking annual wildlife surveys.
Experience reviewing and supporting consultation and permitting documents (NEPA, Clean Water Act, etc.).
Experience verifying and delineating wetlands using USACE data sheets.
Experience preparing ESA Section 7 consultations for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service.
Experience monitoring construction sites for compliance with environmental regulations.
Experience identifying Best Management Practices (BMP) to avoid impacts on natural resources and to comply with environmental regulations.
Essential Duties
Execute wildlife surveys and field inventories; implement and develop site‑specific survey protocols.
Use GPS units and tablets for data collection; perform data QA/QC, analysis, storage, and reporting.
Lead all‑species point counts and provide avian management recommendations.
Support and supervise CEMML biologists, hourly/part‑time employees, and subcontractors on site.
Coordinate with CSU/CEMML supervisors, project managers, and principal investigators to ensure deliverable requirements are met.
Prepare stormwater and natural resources inspection reports; contribute to reports and deliverables.
Map creation for environmental reports; download and manage GIS data; analyze spatial datasets.
Assist in permitting processes; develop ESA documents; manage report writing schedules.
Maintain program budgets, monitor expenditures, and support program coordination and reporting.
