Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Temporary Accounting Manager to join our nonprofit organization in Oakland, CA. This is a 100% on‑site position requiring a hands‑on leader who can manage our accounting team while maintaining the highest standards of financial integrity and compliance. The ideal candidate will have proven nonprofit accounting management experience and can step in immediately to maintain continuity of our financial operations.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Management
- Supervise and mentor a team of 3-5 accounting staff members including bookkeepers, accounting clerks, and accounts payable/receivable specialists
- Conduct daily team meetings to prioritize workload and address urgent matters
- Review and approve staff work including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports
- Provide training and development opportunities to enhance team capabilities
- Manage staff schedules and coverage to ensure continuous department operations
Financial Operations
- Oversee full‑cycle accounting operations including AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger
- Ensure timely and accurate month‑end and year‑end close processes
- Manage cash flow and prepare daily/weekly cash position reports
- Review and approve all check runs, wire transfers, and ACH transactions
- Maintain chart of accounts and ensure proper coding of transactions
Grant & Fund Accounting
- Ensure proper tracking and reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds
- Oversee grant billing, reporting, and compliance with funder requirements
- Manage multiple cost centers and program budgets
- Prepare grant financial reports and support grant audits
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local grant requirements
Compliance & Reporting
- Prepare monthly financial statements for executive leadership and board of directors
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Support annual audit and 990 preparation
- Maintain internal controls and update policies and procedures as needed
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements
Systems & Process Management
- Oversee accounting systems and recommend improvements
- Streamline processes to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Manage relationships with banks and financial institutions
- Coordinate with other departments on budget and financial matters
- Document all accounting procedures and maintain procedure manual
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience managing staff in a nonprofit accounting department (this is mandatory)
- Total of 5-7 years of progressive nonprofit accounting experience
- Experience with fund accounting and restricted grant management
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in nonprofit accounting software (QuickBooks Nonprofit, Sage Intacct, or similar)
- Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and complex formulas
- Experience with donor management and grant tracking systems
- Knowledge of nonprofit GAAP and fund accounting principles

- Knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200)
- Previous experience in Oakland Bay Area nonprofits
- Experience with nonprofit organizations focused on social services, education, or community development
- Bilingual capabilities (Spanish, Cantonese, or Vietnamese) a plus
Work Environment & Requirements
- 100% on‑site position at our Oakland, CA office (near Lake Merritt BART station)
- Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
- Must be available to start within 2 weeks
- Occasional evening availability for board meetings (monthly)
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds (file boxes)

Assignment Details
- Duration: 3‑6 months with possibility of extension
- Start Date: Immediate

- Hourly Rate: $45‑$60/hour based on experience
- Hours: Full‑time, 40 hours per week
