Job Summary The
Speech Pathologist (Per Diem)
provides acute care services to patients of all ages—from pediatric to geriatric—within the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Under the direction of the Chief Speech Pathologist, this position evaluates, diagnoses, and treats a wide range of communication, cognitive, and swallowing disorders. The Speech Pathologist collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, and therapists to ensure safe, effective, and patient‑centered care across the continuum of recovery.
Key Responsibilities
70% – Clinical Care: Provide comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment services for patients across all age groups—in acute care, ICU, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient settings—under the direction of the Chief Speech Pathologist.
15% – Program Support: Contribute to the daily operations and overall effectiveness of the Speech Pathology Section, collaborating with interdisciplinary team members to ensure quality patient care.
10% – Documentation & Billing: Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, reports, and billing records in accordance with departmental and regulatory standards.
5% – Professional Development: Participate in educational and training activities to enhance and maintain professional skills and clinical knowledge.
Minimum Qualifications
California Licensed Speech Pathologist
Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech‑Language Pathology (CCC‑SLP) from the American Speech‑Language‑Hearing Association (ASHA)
American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
Master’s degree in Speech Pathology
Completion of a Clinical Fellowship Year
Thorough knowledge of appropriate assessment instruments, test administration procedures, scoring, and interpretation
Ability to extract pertinent information to relate to patients and/or family members
Knowledge of patient response expectations, average length of stay, and recognition of appropriate versus inappropriate treatment
Ability to establish programs based on testing results appropriate for each patient
Ability to recognize the need for program modification
Ability to extract pertinent behaviors and incorporate these into daily written progress notes
Knowledge of various home programs and organization into individual programs for family implementation
Ability to report to the referring physician regarding patient diagnosis, skills, and prognosis using appropriate terminology and information
Empathetic and supportive communication with family members
Ability to maintain patient records and process necessary billing forms and treatment authorizations accurately and promptly
Keep an accurate schedule and personal workload accounts
Follow verbal and written instructions from the section chief, including attendance at weekly meetings
Knowledge of current therapeutic and evaluative instruments
Assume responsibility for other therapists’ patients on short notice
Communicate effectively with other therapists
Provide instruction and supervision, as required, for student interns and medical students
Knowledge of community resources
Preferred Qualifications
2 years of experience in a hospital or clinical setting
Experience working in an acute care setting with complex patient populations

Work Environment

Minimum of eight (8) shifts per month, including at least two (2) weekend shifts per four‑week scheduling period.

Must complete annual safety and required training on time and maintain current CPR certification, Rubella immunity, and TB screening.
Must annually review hospital safety policies and procedures.
Requires sufficient vision, hearing, speech, and physical strength to safely and effectively interact with and assist patients.

This is a critical position, as defined by UC Policy and local procedures, and as such, employment is contingent upon clearing a criminal background check(s) and may include drug screening, medical evaluation, clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
