HVAC Technician (Stationary Engineer 3)

role at the State of Washington. This open position is in the Department of Enterprise Services (DES), Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G), serving the Washington State Capitol Campus.

About The Opportunity The HVAC Technician will plan, perform, and oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of HVAC systems and components serving DES‑owned facilities in Thurston County. Responsibilities include installing, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing steam heating systems, boilers, air handlers, variable air volume units, commercial refrigeration, and chilled water systems. The role also involves inspecting and maintaining heating, cooling, ventilation, plumbing, and sewer systems, ensuring optimal performance of automated building monitoring and control systems, troubleshooting and calibrating electrical, electronic, and pneumatic control systems, interpreting blueprints, and working closely with the building automation team.

Key Duties

Operate and maintain all aspects of HVAC systems, including performing necessary alterations and repairs.

Manage the installation, diagnosis, and repair of steam heating system components, such as high‑pressure boilers.

Maintain and repair commercial refrigeration equipment essential for air conditioning and chilled water systems.

Manage and troubleshoot building control systems (electrical, electronic, pneumatic) by monitoring, analyzing, adjusting, and maintaining sensors and actuators.

Develop cost estimates for projects and systems repairs.

Qualifications Required:

Option 1: Four (4) years of experience in the operation and repair of commercial HVAC, HVAC/R equipment, and/or high‑pressure boilers; ability to operate hand and power tools.

Option 2: One (1) year of experience as a Stationary Engineer 2 within State service; ability to operate hand and power tools.

Preferred:

Demonstrated skill in HVAC work.

Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the HVAC trade.

Knowledge of current HVAC, electrical codes, and safety precautions.

Ability to work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; estimate labor and materials required.
