We are seeking a dedicated and professional Personal Trainer to join the Fitness Department at the University of California, Berkeley. The role supports healthy living and wellness within the campus community.

Departmental Overview The Fitness Department is part of Berkeley Recreation & Wellbeing. We foster health, fitness, and overall quality of life for students and campus affiliates through classes, personal training, and outreach.
Position Summary Provide instructional guidance, program activities, and first‑aid support in an accredited fitness environment. Conduct fitness assessments, personal training sessions, and maintain professional confidentiality. Serve as a liaison to other recreation programs and uphold Berkeley RedWell policies.

Responsibilities
Provide advanced or specialized activity instruction to participants, individually or in groups.
Conduct sessions at the RSF, other campus locations, or virtually through live‑streamed and on‑demand content.
Program and periodize strength, cardiovascular, flexibility, balance, speed/agility/quickness, plyometrics, and core training.
Work with students, faculty, staff, and community members and program appropriate modifications and progression.
Adapt workouts to available equipment and resources in a busy environment.
Maintain a welcoming and supportive environment and facilitate participation.
Lead energizing, safe, and fun sessions for all fitness levels.
Answer participants’ questions to support their wellness goals.
Build authentic relationships, encourage community connection, and promote Berkeley Rec Sports.
Ensure safe environments by managing equipment condition and storage.
Instruct on correct equipment usage and body mechanics.
Update availability in Mindbody scheduling software and provide weekly appointment slots.
Track client progress and maintain administrative records.
Maintain professional certifications, including CRR/AED.
Pursue continuing education and update teaching methods.
Participate in required professional development activities.
Required Qualifications
Working knowledge of program activity practices and procedures.
Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, with active listening and critical thinking.
Service orientation, program management, sound judgment, and creative problem‑solving.
Client‑service mindset, entrepreneurial spirit, and creative thinking.
Basic computer skills relevant to job duties.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, campus policies and procedures.
Effective cross‑level collaboration within the organization.
Previous experience with instruction of fitness and recreation programs.
Experience with age‑level specific programming.
Current certification with an NCCA‑accredited organization: NASM‑CPT, ACSM‑CPT, NSCA‑CPT, ISSA‑CPT, or ACE‑CPT.
American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR with AED.
High school diploma and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Standard First Aid Training Certification.
Salary & Benefits The budgeted hourly range for this position is $18.67 – $46.25. Full benefits information is available on the University of California Compensation & Benefits website.
