Job Summary Works with the Media, Outreach, Volunteer and Education (MOVE) Team to develop, plan, and implement education and outreach programs and activities for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) that support the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries’ education mission to inspire ocean conservation. Supports community engagement programs, develops training materials, and supports community outreach. Coordinates the day-to-day operations of volunteer-based programs for FKNMS.

Responsibilities

Lead Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary volunteer programs, overseeing daily operations and developing strategies to enhance volunteer opportunities within the sanctuary.

Participate as Florida Keys liaison for national Volunteer Coordinator meetings, including assisting headquarters staff as necessary on system-wide projects related to volunteer engagement.

Develop, oversee, and implement volunteer training and retention programs, including recruitment, onboarding, recognition, and appreciation events.

Oversee the FKNMS internship programs, both in-person and virtually, and provide mentorship services to students.

Coordinate FKNMS-affiliated staff involvement in volunteer efforts, including identifying volunteer needs and matching volunteers with staff mentors.

Prepare volunteer position descriptions for public distribution (electronic/print).

Collaborate with NOAA headquarters to facilitate required volunteer paperwork (e.g., service agreements, background checks, diver certifications, etc.).

Maintain volunteer records, including tracking and reporting hours.

Communicate with FKNMS volunteers regarding events, opportunities, and shift scheduling.

Respond to inquiries about the FKNMS volunteer program and internship opportunities.

Develop strategies to improve FKNMS volunteer program processes, expand the network, and identify new partnerships.

Perform targeted FKNMS outreach at community events (booths, festivals) and conduct presentations, training, and speaking engagements for stakeholders.

Support implementation of the Restoration Blueprint, FKNMS Management Plan, and other adaptive management priorities identified by sanctuary leadership.

Plan and coordinate education and outreach programs, communications products, and other tools to inform residents and visitors about FKNMS and foster sustainable use and protection. Oversee day-to-day implementation of education and activities, including developing and implementing products, programs, and guidelines to promote best practices and encourage resource protection among sanctuary users (e.g., boater education).

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of experience.

Desired Qualifications

Position works from Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) offices in Key West, Florida.

Knowledge of marine science, coral reef ecology and cultural resources; and local waters.
