Job Description The essential functions of the Associate Engineer class may vary depending on assignment and include:
preparing engineering designs, drawings and specifications; preparing cost and quantity estimates; providing engineering support to operations staff; reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies; analyzing and resolving problems; supervising the preparation of detailed engineering drawings; assigning and reviewing the work of subordinate staff and consultants; determining resources necessary to complete assigned work; reviewing plans, permit applications and specifications; verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements, and quality; preparing technical engineering reports; interviewing, selecting, training, monitoring, evaluating and counseling staff; preparing bid documents; reviewing and analyzing bids; and conducting meetings and making presentations. Performs other related duties as required.
Eligibility & Qualifications
Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience, of which two (2) years are equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher.
Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil Engineering.
Substitutions
Candidates licensed in other states who otherwise meet the minimum requirements of this announcement, but do not possess the required California license, may file for this examination, and if successful, will be placed under waiver on the resulting eligible list until the required California license is presented.
There is no substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher.
As a new recruitment for this classification will be opening shortly after the eligible list for this one has been adopted, there is no general waiver available for City & County of San Francisco employees who have six (6) months experience as a 5203 Assistant Engineer, but less than the required experience for this position, to be admitted to the exam process.
License or Certificate Some positions may require a valid driver license.
Working Conditions Some positions may require specific lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; working in high places and confined spaces; exposure to various weather conditions and outdoors; bending, sitting, and walking for extended periods of time and over uneven surfaces. Positions in this class may also be required to work specific schedules which may include weekends, holidays, part time, nights, and/or overtime.
